Musings and Meanderings
The newsletter is going out a little earlier this month. We are headed to Houston around Christmas to meet with my brother's significant other's family. Her kids and grandkids are all going to be there! I will remember their names while I am there but will probably forget once we return from the trip. We have a few things planned - checking out painted churches, an underground walking tour of downtown Houston, checking out the Mark Rothko chapel and restaurants new to us. And lots of folding starting on the plane as I plan to give out mandalas galore. Will also be trying out new envelopes (for flat Xmas gifts, you know, like currency) but the square ones I normally fold will still be the go to for housing my folded mandalas.
I didn't mention meeting D. Hinklay (his YouTube channel; his Instagram), in last month's newsletter - I felt it was already going a bit long. Hinklay-san is an origamist I follow and met at the Japanese American Cultural & Community Center in Little Tokyo, downtown Los Angeles, during his solo exhibit. His work was dazzling and the man remained an enigma to me despite my best efforts to charm him to remove his mirrored sunglasses and bandanna covering the lower portion of his face.
There were many questions from my Brazilian origami group that I asked: What was his nationality? He is Japanese with a good command of the English language - I never found out his Japanese name but he told me about how he came up with his pseudonym, D. Hinklay; How old was he? He is 32; How long had he been folding? He started to fold as a kid in school (nothing really interested him in school except for origami) and his father encouraged and supported him. I bought several copies of a crease pattern he produced where the creases pattern was outlined in blue foil against a black background. I do intend to fold a frame and sandwich this between acetate sheets. He will be back in Los Angeles next year and I did try to plant a suggestion that maybe a workshop should also be a part of the exhibit. He also very kindly signed a few postcards for me!
Also whenever we are in Little Tokyo we always visit the James Irvine Japanese Garden (in the same building as the Hinklay exhibit) which is an amazing hidden tranquil garden in the middle of downtown Los Angeles. I also finally noticed the ginko leaves on the tree grates along the streets and got a picture with my shoes in the way. We usually also try to fit in a burrito run as East LA is just on the other side of Little Tokyo but I was blissfully tired and went home to take a nap instead. Sigh!
Forgot to mention that we found 2 restaurants new to us when we were up in Cambria riding Clydesdale horses. We are definitely adding them to our rotation whenever we are up in the Central Coast. I am crazy about biscuits and gravy minus the biscuits and one of the places we found added gravy to their breakfast burritos with more on the side for dipping. I was sold and obssessed. If you are up in the Central Coast town of Pismo Beach, do check out Beachin' Biscuits. Even as I write this I am trying to figure out how to get back up there. I am planning a trip back up to Tomales Bay (north of San Francisco) next year so maybe on the way back? The other restaurant we loved served up some absolutely wonderful seafood with stupendous sunset views is Oyster Loft - a most unexpected find.
Finally got Bill to start getting our breakfast berries from the farmers market. I had been trying this on and off for the last few years and then about 2 months ago I suggested a combo walk and farmers market visit at one of the larger ones near us. It had been a minute since we were last there. We took a small walk and as we were passing through the farmers market one of the vendors made a concerted effort to get our attention. We stopped and when Bill tasted the berries he was hooked! I didn't even have to suggest we start getting our berries from this farmers market from now on. Is it manipulation if it ended up being his idea? I was just happy that we were able to support California farmers and that I was right (imagine internal grin)!?!
BTW - not listening to the Google Maps lady can bring about some cool picture opportunities. For example, I have posed with giant Adirondack chairs 2x now. Once in Sonoma, CA, back in 2017, at the Sunset Test Gardens in an orange one (also stayed in a rail car room on the same trip - I vaguely remember seeing grapevines e-v-e-r-y where) and more recently a giant blue one on the grounds of a beachfront resort in Santa Barbara, CA (our usual pit stop for a break for the bathroom, stretching of legs and McConnell's ice cream at the breakwater) on the way up to Cambria.
I hope the owl outside my window stays - they (not sure if it is a him or her) have been starting to hoot earlier and earlier but then the nights have been sliding over the days earlier and earlier - it would be lovely to hear little owlets in the spring and this is the longest stretch of time I have heard them! Keeping my hopes up for a future owl romance.
I hope 2025 will open explorations & adventures in your art, in your life, where you live, what you do. See you then.
