Books & Paper Arts Calendar Updates - August 2025

Hello everyone,

For a better newsletter experience you can also read this email online to get the latest information. I may sometimes add time sensitive information to the newsletter after it is sent out. Feel free to let me know about broken links or links pointing to the wrong page. Read any newsletter in the archives and access the calendar directly using the link in my signature block below or see it in the Workshop Calendar section online. I hope that you can use this newsletter as a jumping off point for your own explorations looking for workshops, teachers and organizations, processes, etc.

  • I has the opportunity to meet and attend a workshop with Pietro Accardi in Newport, OR - get to know him as well during a PSBA lunchtime conversation on Sep 4, 2025 from 12pm - 1pm Pacific Time (get your local time here) and register here
  • Will you be in the Colchester, UK, area in September? The British Origami Society (BOS) will be holding their Autumn 2025 Convention at the Essex Business School from Sep 12 - 14, 2025
  • Are you interested in attending Helen Hiebert's Papermaking Master Class happening Sep 29 – Oct 3, 2025? There is one spot left as of Aug 17, 2025 | If you are interested in attending the Red Cliff Paper Retreat next year in 2026 express your interest here
  • I found a paper store in ... Dublin, Ireland - Liberties Papers & Books - they have a number of book and paper arts workshops and lots of paper - I have it saved for when I visit Dublin in the future
  • I found a new content creator on YouTube, HTX Studio, that builds interesting things like a one-handed keyboard, a trash can that catches your trash and empties itself and a robot that cleans your whiteboard (see Bits & Bobs below)
  • I am also attempting to make the newsletter a little easier to read by putting in appropriate line breaks so that what you read in your emails looks like what is read online on the newsletter platform

How to copy photos from your phone to a flash or drive - I do carry a tiny flash drive (about 1 5/8" or a little over 4cm in length) in my mini purse to backup photos after my last phone died from overheating too often (FYI the Samsung Galaxy S22 was prone to doing that). If I feel my current one feeling a tad bit warm I immediately back up the latest pictures to the flash drive - weirdly enough not all pictures are backed up to Google Photos!

Musings and Meanderings

So where did I leave you last on the downstairs repairs? Let me take a look see at my July musings ... OK! I am back! I sent out the newsletter on July 27th and we were still waiting on the insurance company to send out someone to see what it would cost to make the repairs.

We finally got a visit August 11th and in the meantime we had been without a kitchen since the demolition of the downstairs dining & living room floors and kitchen cabinets happened - July 21st. However I had heard that you can ask to be reimbursed for your meals with receipts or accept a small perdiem. We were going stir crazy waiting on a whole lot of nothing going on. We checked that no work was going to happen on Friday and I planned a really quick getaway to Pismo Beach, CA. I usually avoid towns close to the beach on weekends as it gets really crazy especially during the summer but I figured that most kids were already back in school but it was still a little crazy.

However before I knew if we could get away, my phone stopped charging! Took it to a ubreak wefix place and they looked at the charging port - found corrosion under a mucroscope - which they cleaned as best they could. Started to charge wirelessly but did not like the fact that it got a little too warm when that happened. Had to remove my phone case each time I needed to wirelessly charge as well. Finally broke down and replaced my nightstand charging cable (I knew it was not working well but turning it over seemed to work for a bit until it didn't) and that seemed to do the trick. Also a good opportunity to dust and remove extraneous cables. The new cable was fancy - a 4 in 1 charging one - so I can recharge other things even an iPhone even though we are an Android family.

Then I had to troubleshoot Bill's issue of him not receiving an audio notification for his text messages or showing a bubble with the number of new messages received. Only way he knew about new messages was that the status bar in upper left corner would briefly display that a new message had been received. Tried everything - restarting the phone, clearing the cache, even going as far as clearing data after backing up the phone's apps data. Nothing worked until I continued reading the Reddit post that said clearing the messaging data would work but also suggested that certain bluetooth apps might be hijacking the notification. I thought, "Really?" So turned off bluetooth on his phone and, voila, it worked again! So in the house turn off bluetooth, outside turn on. He paid me my hourly technical support fee because I had to work on it for more than 15 minutes, almost an hour of research and troubleshooting.

So back to the trip - we usually pick up a boba milk tea from our favorite place before heading to the hotel but was most disappointed to find out that it had closed - a glimmer of fore shadowing to come (see next paragraph). We got to the hotel before check-in time and the room we had selected was not ready. No worries really as they got us into one that was ready. We had dinner at a farm to table place that had wood fired flatbreads in a truly spectacular oven. It was a joy to watch a smores marshmallow dessert melt to cover the brownie that was topped with ganache. We try not to have anything too sugary after dinner but may make an exception in the future for this one if we had another couple to share it with! The next day after breakfast, picking up an excellent latte steamed with sage and an anti inflammatory booster (turmeric, ginger, lemon, raw honey and chamomile tea) we took a walk on a boardwalk sandwiched between a golf course and sand dunes on the beach. Lots of interacting with people, dogs and exclamations about the beautiful weather. The marine layer had rolled back out to sea, it was sunny with just the right amount of breeze keeping the sweat away and not too much to bring on the sniffles. Am I allergic to fresh air? It was a marvelous walk!

Then around lunch time we got the call that the company that was supposed to do the repairs had closed its doors! Luckily our project manager (who was also laid off by that company) was able to pivot and partner with another contractor to come on board to do the repairs. Insurance folks were informed, checks were cancelled, hands were wrung. We are now working with the project manager and the new company to get repairs done as soon as possible but will still take another 2 - 3 weeks (update: Sep 1st start date). Realistically I suspect it will be more like 4 weeks (if the counters don't break when they are re-installed). To top it off we found out minutes after hanging up with our project manager that the lady we normally house sit for wanted us to be on the Big Island of Hawai'i Sep 3rd - Sep 22nd. I had to regretfully inform her that we could not do it. Sigh (or insert appropriate swear words here)!

But then dinner that night was amazingly delectable at our favorite seafood restaurant. Along with the wonderfully balanced dishes a stranger from Vancouver bought us dessert! We had chatted as we were waiting for the doors to open and had made some recommendations. As he left he wanted to let us know that he loved what he had eaten and had bought us dessert. What?!? We were shocked and barely had time to respond that, "we don't normally do dessert", before he was out the door. However, that vanilla cake with matcha mascarpone mousse topped with strawberry compote was heavenly - a great exception to our no dessert after dinner rule. The strawberry compote was beautifully fragrant balanced out by the mousse and cake and wonder of wonders it was not too sweet. Such lovely surprise being treated to dessert - that has never happened before!

That week of Aug 11th - 17th was truly a roller coaster ride. I cannot wait until I have my kitchen, dining and living room again. I keep telling myself, "patience, patience, p-a-t-i-e-n-c-e!" but the mantra is not really working anymore. That quick trip helped but we are back to a whole lot of waiting for checks to clear, materials to be purchased, maybe planning another quick getaway? I swear I want to jump on a plane to San Francisco (a little more than an hour away) to see the Ruth Arasawa retrospective at the SFMOMA (which closes Sep 2nd), visit the American Bookbinders Museum (before Aug 23rd - might be too late since it is already the 22nd), check out some fantastic beasts statuary at the Yerba Buena Gardens fortified by tacos from the Mission district - should be an easy day trip, don't you think? But the roller coaster continues as I found out that a friend, whom I have gone on several adventures with, just finished a 6-round course of chemo. She had been really quiet lately and one of her videos showed up on one of my feeds that confused me. I called her and left a message to see if she was ok and she updated me. She is using what energy she has to heal from chemo & regroup and as I write this I am sending her love and light. Larger sigh!

Will my hair has go completely white (too late! LOL!)? Will I take that day trip to San Francisco? Were the Mission tacos wroth it? Will the downstairs be done by the time the next newsletter comes out? Stay tuned for the September musings for the answers.

See you next month!
