Books & Paper Arts Calendar Updates - August 2024
Hello everyone,
For a better newsletter experience you can also read this email online to get the latest information. Sometimes I may add time sensitive information to the newsletter after the email is sent out. Read any newsletter in the archives and access the calendar directly using the link in my signature block below
- The Oregon Coast Council for the Arts is accepting proposals for the annual Newport Paper & Book Arts Festival. The 2025 festival dates are Apr 10 - 12, 2025. The details and application are below in the Call for Submission section as well as the calendar in the aforementioned dates
- You can now search the newsletter archive by subject, body, or even metadata - the most relevant results will be shown, and you can click through to the full email - yay! - you can use your browser's find function to locate keywords - this will be useful for me to make sure I don't post the same information too many times - click on the newsletter link here or in my signature block and the search bar will be just above the latest newsletter
- Whoops! Noticed in late July that I was no longer subscribed to the Book Arts List serv and went looking to see how I could re-subscribe - not sure if I saw something about that in the emails I receive from the list serve but that all gets moved automagically to a folder for me to read at a later date - if you need to subscribe or re-subscribe write to: listserv@listserv.cc.emory.edu and in the body of an empty email type in or copy the following: subscribe Book_Arts-L "Your full real name" - leave out the "" - all subscription requests must include the full real name or they will not be approved by the moderator - a confirmation email will then be sent where you will need to confirm this request
- If you can't get enough of edge releases and popups, one of my favorite teachers, Paula Krieg, is offering a workshop with Center for Book Arts, New York - Paula also has another workshop with Jaffe Center for Book Arts (JCBA) as well as Susan Share (unfortunately sold out as of this writing) and Shawn Sheehy - books, boxes and popups, oh my! - so many favorite instructors, so little time!
- Speaking of Shawn Sheehy - he has an on demand workshop (please see the Resource List section) for a cool no glue no stitch tab lock binding and that virtual class with Frederick Book Arts Center if you need more instructions on Nov 7, 2024 (I know I would!)
- If you wish to make a portable punching cradle for your traveling studio, Erin Fletcher has a virtual class on Dec 3 & Dec 5, 2024
- Spring enrolment will open on Oct 2 for Penland for short sessions - lookup by concentrations - lookup by studio
- You may recall I joined a Brazilian Origami group called Desdobradores (The Unfolders) in July 2023 when I came across an elegant & creative origamist named Falk Brito on YouTube, Pinterest and Instagram - as a result of that foray I started following other origamists on Instagram and came across Matthew Green whose work I also admire - he just published his book called Magnificent Origami Mandalas: Radial Modular Origami Models for Enthusiasts - another addition to my origami book collection!
- BTW I will be taking September and October off - these 2 months will be jam packed with traveling and adventures - my segue into fall vacation as it were - I am including more bits and bobs to check out at your leisure - the newsletter will be back at the end of November (or perhaps I should not intrude during the holiday season and start up at the end of December instead - let me know)

Musings and Meanderings
My latest obsession seems to be with keyboards and who knew there is a whole other world out there to do with keyboards? I thought I was perfectly happy with the standard, black, keyboard that normally comes with any new computer. Now that I think about it I did crowdfund a typewriter inspired mechanical keyboard. It was a nice aural memory harking back to when I was editor for my secondary school (high school) year book. Then a keyboard YouTuber showed up in my recommended feed that made me wonder if I preferred "thocky" over "clacky". Next thing you know I took an Alice in Wonderland dive down that rabbit hole. I went down a world of keycaps, switches, cases, foam/no foam, whether you are team silent, thocky or clacky (for how you like the way the keyboard sounds and other keyboard vocabulary) and other assorted customizations! I found a keyboard with all [Esc] keys keyboard but since I never learned to touch type properly this would probably not work for me. I am saving my allowance for this rather unique one where I can configure it to my sound specifications. I also love how unusual it looks! And the colors! It will be a visual and aural feast! Waiting for a black Friday sale to maybe make my move.
As an aside my little compact SUV, a Honda HR-V, just turned 9 and aside from being rear-ended a year to the day we bought it, it really has not given us any trouble but then again Bill does keep the cars well maintained. We have taken some amazing driving trips in this car from long weekends to 3 week adventures (mentioned in this section in past newsletters). We will continue taking driving trips but with shorter driving intervals and maybe more than just an overnight stay in the city or town that is on the way. I have planned a trip to pick up my brother and his significant other in the San Jose area in mid-September and will drive back south to the Los Angeles area on Highway 1. Then 2 weeks after we get back we head back to Hawai'i to house and cat sit again. Yes, I know that we were just there and we weren't going to house sit again this year but I had an overwhelming urge to head back to the island at the end of June. Sigh! We should try to go other places but the draw emanates from 3rd or 4th rib down - I was surprised at how palpable it was. So what do I do for November and December to keep busy? LOL!
Earlier in August, I met up with a fellow Paula Krieg workshop-mate, Yolanda A. to check out the Ed Rocha and Simone Leigh exhibit at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). Lunch was at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures as the cafe at LACMA was closed. Both exhibits were amazing with the humor & cheekiness of Ed Roscha and the exploration of how I feel as woman in my past and present with Simone Leigh. We ducked in to see Metropolis II very quickly (the cacophony was a definite assault on my ears but to watch all the little cars going around and around about their business reminded me of how we go around and around about our business) and took sanctuary next door in the Band by Richard Serra where we could walk around the sinewy form and wondering about the seeming presence of condensation on the "rusted" weatherproof steel.
I thoroughly enjoyed Paula Krieg's video on her submission to the exhibit of Mathematical Art. To honor Paula's entry in the Bridges Mathematical Art exhibit I thought I would fold a mandala that looked like a compound of 2 squares and 9 Froebel units to put together a quilt looking like a compound of 2 squares. The mandala consists of 8 "petals" with each petal having 11 folds. The quilt consisting of 9 Froebel units appear to be moving through each other. I may re-do this quilt as it feels like there are too many colors to see the compound of 2 squares. I hope to get pictures up on my Instagram account soon.
See you in November!
