My very 1st ever workshop at NPBAF in 2015 was with Randi Parkhurst. Some fellow book and paper artists met up with me in Eureka, CA and we talked about what class she taught in 2025 and "introduced" her to some people there who did not know who she was. Musings and Meanderings
What have I been up to since my last newsletter? Well, lots of adventures , so here goes!
Finished up with Paul Jackson's workshop - One-Piece Structural Packaging - it was amazing and wonderful and completely worth the price of admission but why do I keep signing up for classes calling for more precision than I can muster. However I did learn something in the very first class that I believe I can apply to a future workshop in October for ZXB (Zhen Xian Bao or Chinese Thread Book) Series 3. And speaking of Paul Jackson workshops I signed up for another in September/October time frame - An Introduction to Non-Model Paper Folding - since it is about paper folding I am hoping that my experience with origami can help with that. But talk about workshop episodes replicating themselves both in April and October - Paul Jackson and Susan Share & Paula Krieg workshops occurring over 2 consecutive days. I am going to have to warm up my fingers!
As for ZXB Series 1, I loved, loved, loved being a part of that workshop. Even though it was my 3rd time taking this workshop I always learn something new, enjoyed the vibe & creativity and was an all round great way to refresh my ZXB-ness! Loved getting to know the ZXB boxes and trays again. They bring great folding joy along with remembering past experiments. It reminded me how much I love to fold with rock paper (yes, made from rocks) and wanted to experiment with making marks on them with fold lines or sharp tips and I got more tips from generous NPBAF attendees.
Finished a chocolate taste test from Bar & Cocoa, an online company, specifically from Francois Pralus (1st ran across this brand in Tucson last year) - they sold a sleeve of tiny chocolate bars about an inch square - more than enough really to see if I liked the flavor profile or not - all at 75% - truly a delectable and yummy experiment. Managed to find a chocolatier in the next town over and am planning a tour (who is with me?) - woo hoo!
Also had a Getty Center adventure when I met up with fellow ZXB Series 1 (plus other Paula Krieg and Susan Share workshops) classmate, Yolanda A., for fossil hunting in the travertine limestone (next time you are there ask the info desk for the fossil map - I also have one more place that is not on the map for you to check out), a long and luxuriously drawn out lunch to catch up and convince her to sign up for ZXB Series 2 (luckily it wasn't that difficult!) and catching the María Magdalena Campos-Pons: Behold exhibit (moving, literally and figuratively, and at times just a wee bit unsettling). I had forgotten how much I loved the Getty Center and its grounds and missed hearing the many languages spoken by the many visitors. I used to volunteer there from 2016 through 2017. Loved learning about the shortcuts and secret passageways, popping out and having people exclaim, "Where did you come from?", "From behind that massive door with the card reader" and "Can we go through there as well?", "Sadly, no." The most frequently asked question we got, "Where are the bathrooms?" (probably not realizing how far apart every where is in the LA area - btw Los Angeles county has more people living in it than 40 other US states) and the 2nd most frequently asked one, "Do we have to pay to get into the museum?", "No, only for parking and if you can get to the Getty Villa on the same day parking is free there."
As for my trip to Newport, OR, for the Newport Paper and Book Arts Festival, there were many adventures there, too. We drove over 2,600 miles (4,100 km) through 2 states (CA and OR), stopped in or stayed at 30 towns while enjoying sunny, windy, cold and foggy weather - typical spring weather on the west coast. We started from our home in Harbor City, CA, just north of the Port of Los Angeles, drove our way to Newport, OR, and turned around to come back home in 14 days. I'll tell you more about it in the May newsletter ....
But along the way to these many towns we drove through some exquisite scenery - all the way from long coastal stretches with ancient headlands reduced to sea stacks barely holding their own above water to stands of magnificent redwoods, patches of wildflowers flirting with each car that went by to glimpses of unusually green hued rivers that were sometimes rushing & sometimes meandering their way to the Pacific Ocean. Most times we were by ourselves on the freeway and so we able to slalom through the curves, you know, take the outside of curves like a race car driver. It was glorious!
See you in May!
