Book & Paper Arts Calendar Updates - September 4, 2017
Hello everyone,
So other than re-organizing my workshop binder (Hedi Kyle related in a 3” binder with page protectors so that models can be included, and other workshops & stuff I figured out myself in another) and picking up some friends from the airport at LAX International terminal it has been a nice quiet week staying cool while Bill volunteered full days at the unified command center for Fleet Week/Labor Day weekend (Aug 31 - Sep 4). He is very glad that is done! I get to drag him beachcombing up in the San Luis Obispo County area for a couple of days before we report for our volunteer gig at the Santa Barbara Sea Glass Festival (see Sep 9 - 10) as a reward! I wish I had known earlier about the Vandenberg AFB rocket launch on Sep 14 - I would have planned the beachcombing for after the festival and hung around for the launch. There is nothing like hearing and feeling the roar of the rocket as it takes off and this is one of the bigger ones!
My husband and I love to travel and when we do we try to stay in unusual places. One of the more unusual places we have stayed at is at a place called Vision Quest Ranch Safari B&B (http://visionquestranch.com/). I mention it because I noticed they had a groupon coupon for stays through January 2018 (a few nights left in January 2018). They are located in Salinas (Monterey & Carmel are relatively close) in a private zoo. You can watch the elephants, ostriches, water buffalo and zebras play from your deck, you get up close and personal daily visits in the evenings from one of the smaller animals in the zoo and an elephant delivers your continental breakfast in the morning! You also get to feed the elephant some treats post-delivery. You can hears the lions as they settle in for the night. It was one of my favorite stays - we were glamping and communing with nature.
In looking for workshops I came across the Haliburton School of the Arts - Fleming College (https://tinyurl.com/ydhffse9) in Petersborough, Ontario, Canada, about 1 1/2 hours NE of Toronto. I love that they offer both harmonica lessons as well as learning how to carve a 4-foot totem!
Creativebug is offering a month long “Daily Book Art” online class (https://tinyurl.com/y8umvkkc). The content looks like a lot of fun and is a nice small bite of a lot of classes I am looking at (which would require quite a bit of travel). If you sign up for the free trial you would get unlimited access to this online class once the trial is over. I may just bite the bullet and spend the $4.95 since I already took advantage of their free trial!
