Book & Paper Arts Calendar Updates - September 22, 2017

Happy Autumnal Equinox, everyone!

I found a workshop in Iceland (see newly found workshops below) for next summer - so you can visit Iceland and make 2 books!

I am somewhat of an astronomy geek and so was in a little bit mourning last Friday (Sep 15) when Cassini plunged into the atmosphere of Saturn. Some of the most beautiful pictures of Saturn come from this little space craft and one of my favorites is where Saturn is in crescent and the shadow of Saturn looks like it has obliterated part of the rings. I have attached it in case you want to take a look.

If you like to look up at the night sky as I do (I was even admiring a sunset tonight as Bill filled up the car at Costco), the Star Walk app is a good one to have on your phone.

If you would like to be texted to see the International Space Station as it flies by overhead at your location at almost 12,000 mph sign up here: https://spotthestation.nasa.gov/.

Solar eclipses happening in the next 50 years are here: http://time.com/4897581/total-solar-eclipse-years-next/.

Last but not least if you would like to catch some meteor showers check it out here: http://earthsky.org/astronomy-essentials/earthskys-meteor-shower-guide

The best meteor shower I have ever seen was the 2016 Perseids where Jupiter’s gravity managed to pull in even more comet dust and made for a spectacular show. Meteors everywhere you looked and once a while what looked like a drunk satellite wondering around up there. One of the darkest place to look at the night sky is Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. If you are wondering what it would be like to take in an overnight trip with a bona-fide astronomer this outfit does a great job: http://www.californiaoverland.com/. They set everything up for you for camping and they feed you as well. Here are some upcoming classes in the LA area, San Francisco (SF), along the west coast and some states just to the east (it could be a day-long adventure, make a weekend or whole vacation out of it!).
