  • The best way to stop a scam is to s-l-o-w down - a good rule of thumb is that almost nothing legitimate needs to be handled while someone is waiting on the phone for you - if someone is creating a feeling of panic and telling you that you need to act immediately, hang up - never click on a link from an email or text - call the person who is in "trouble" directly - contact the bank, company or agency yourself using a phone number or website you know is legitimate
  • BTW, if you haven't had a chance to select one of the mandalas I made during my 30-day challenge here is the link to check them out. Note: A strikethrough through the day means that mandala was already selected by someone else

I was trying to hunt down the name of a mandala I was folding from a certain creative and I went from just following her to admiring her - she folds practically every day whether vibbing from other creatives or experimenting with her own creations - she goes by @yoriko_abecyan on Instagram and Yoriko Abecyan on YouTube - she usually has tutorials on either platform if you are interested in folding any of her posts

Musings and Meanderings

The weather has been vile for the last few months here in Southern California. Summer is usually relatively mild and dry by the coast but the tropical storms just missing Southern California have created a hot and muggy weather situation as if we were living in Texas (so, no, we didn't bring it back with us when we visited in August). The humidity has been unrelenting as Southern California ended up being on the fringe of several passing tropical storms. There was even rain in the 2nd week this month. What with all the rains happening the park next to us transformed into the Okavango Delta where all the animals gathered to drink their fill after a parched, dry season. More bird songs than ever especially unfamiliar ones that reached me when we opened the windows attempting to catch a breeze. You had to have a really good reason to be close to the airport to have lunch in 104° weather which we did when we met friends we hadn't seen in a while before they sent off a loved one to Norway for a cruise.

And in this muggy, humid, sweaty weather I managed to reclaim some square footage in the room that holds too much of my stuff. I admit it - where most people have a junk drawer I have a junk room or room of doom but technically my 2nd bedroom. The crazy thing is what happens to me when I attempt to organize a small part of my life, for example, my lucky money packets (which tend to be red with gold accents and are little pieces of art in their own right). I just started following a youTuber called Clutterbug to help with my de-cluttering and organizing styles and I do love her Canadian accent! She suggests taking everything out of the area you want to organize, put it some place big enough to spread everything out (bedroom floor for me as the dining room table is downstairs). Start with macro organizing and then finesse to micro organizing if you need to. I certainly need to as I found out I am a cricket organizer with a slight hint of bee.

The thing is when I start reorganizing it tends to spirals out to bigger & bigger tasks. In the example above I had to figure out how to store and display these red & gold packets. So I figured a 3-ring binder with transparent sleeves that have various sized pockets in them since what I have collected came in many different sizes. Observation: I have noticed these packets getting bigger - is that a hint about inflation or what? But did I have these sleeved pockets? Of course not! I have loads of regular page protectors that I use to store and preserve my workshop and origami mandala notes but not at all useful for my lucky money packets. So off I go to research these sleeves (which might also be handy for organizing my stickers although I don't use them much any more except as envelope closures). And now that I am talking about this, it sounds like a task I may have bemoaned about before but it would take too much sweaty time to have a look back.

I did find a large enough container (from a previous workshop) to hold all my lovely red packets that I had stashed in several places (I have more than I thought I did!), the binder and sleeved pockets. In looking for the container I saw that I had a few boxes that were holding soon-to-be donated items. Then I saw more things that could be donated and the next thing you know I reclaimed about 6 square feet of floor space in "that" corner of the 2nd bedroom. I had to take another shower after that push of de-cluttering but guess what? I continued, after the shower, to break down boxes to store them flat instead of being used to prop up other things, all taking up precious floor space. However, I still have some more parent sized paper that needs to be sorted. Of course as I continue to look around I see many more things to declutter and organize. An open invitation for you - if you are in the Los Angeles area feel free to come by and pick up some paper - seriously! Please!

My monitor died today, Sep 14, 2026, amidst a day filled with car appointments and juggling other things as well as trying to work on my newsletter. I was a little annoyed and then realized that it have been on my desk since 2015 and definitely got more than I expected for my investment. Even though the monitor was a docking hub HDMI (video monitor) port killer (and it was always just that one port) I did learn a lot about these docking stations. I had to go through about 2 of these before figuring out that I needed to get a docking hub with power delivery (at least 100W) in. Sigh! On the bright side, I was able to get same day delivery for my new monitor, also a Dell, just like my laptop (also old, oh dear!) and even though they are the same brand I hope they play nice together.

Why do I have a docking hub you may ask? It helps for a quick disconnect of my laptop from all its peripherals (monitor, monitor light, keyboard (if wired), backup hard drive, web cam, ring light [so my face isn't in the dark as my back is to the window for those times I am on zoom] etc.) with just one connection, if you have to grab and go. My new monitor was delivered around 7:30 PM and I spent less than 2 hours removing all the post-it notes at the bottom of the old screen, removing the old monitor (I was just a bit sad and did thank it for 11 years of service) & associated cables, unboxing the new monitor, figuring out how the new stand connected to the monitor, plugging in the new cabling to power & laptop, and dusting, lots of dusting and finally plugging in power and video to the new monitor and seeing if it would power on.

Cables for video and power always mean having to go below my desk and untangling the old cables and keeping the news one as untangled as possible. Became a bit of a contortionist as my desk has diagonal supports underneath and I had to twist my arm at unnatural angles to get to the back left leg as well as keeping my head low enough so as not to hit it on the bottom of the desk drawers. I also managed to find a very old extension cord I was no longer using and off to the trash it went. Yay! More de-cluttering! And wonder of wonders, the old laptop and new monitor do play nice together.

Is it time for a reorganization of the desk? I have already re-organized part of it but do I want to do more? I have been decluttering and organizing around the house quite a bit - pantry (nice to see space on the shelves and what I have), 2nd bedroom (see above), bookcase (4 out of 9 cubes) and walk-in closet in the master bedroom and yet there is still more to be done. Don't even get me started on the loft and entryway closets. How the heck do you organize and store leftover matboard from a framing store?

I have been sending out requested challenge mandalas. Let me know if you'd like one and I'll snail mail one to you. Check out what is left

Caught a glimpse of the lunar eclipse that happened at the end of August - it was a bit cloudy & hot & muggy so after a quick look I ducked back into the house to watch it on the Griffith Observatory feed in air-conditioned comfort!

BTW I was also honored by my origami teacher in Brazil. He created a mandala for me and called it Mandala Edaj, Jade backwards. Of course, I haven't folded anything after my 30-day challenge and being in Colorado and Texas. Will let you know when I fold my mandala!

Went to a favorite breakfast restaurant and noticed it was packed with what looked like a breakfast meeting of about 60 people with grey/silver/white heads like mine. We were able to obtain 2 seats at the counter and my curiousity got the better of me. I inadvertantly managed to ask the original organizers what was going on. The original 7 got together to talk about girls and motorcycles and they are now over 70 strong. They been getting together on the 1st Friday of the month for over 20 years now. They are the Buddhahead Breakfast Club. How could you not be inspired by that?!?

I also finally saw my first CA license plate after the series that started in the 1980s ran out. The plates ran sequentially starting at 1AAA000 all the way to 9ZZZ999, roughly 158 million plates. The new sequence flipped to 000AAA1 and I was actively looking for it whenever we were out and about. Finally saw one that started with 061 and others have reported that CA is already on the 200s. On the way to a wedding a few days ago I saw a plate starting with 638! They are expecting this configuration to last 40 years. Spotting license plates is one of the travel games I play on driving trips, no matter how short or long.

Will also be heading to San Diego after sending out the newsletter to join my brother and sister-in-law as they spend time with their granddaughter who is in the Navy and stationed at Point Loma until November. What a great excuse for a quick trip to San Diego.

Looking forward to October as it be much cooler by then and the leaves on the ginko trees near near me will be turning yellow.

See you next month!

About the newsletter & Housekeeping

If you have read this far, thank you for your interest and continued support. This newsletter is a labor of love that I compile when time and bandwidth allows for reviewing, researching, collecting and collating information from hundreds of emails, websites and entirely too many internet rabbit holes. I try to shoot for publishing the newsletter between the 22nd and 27th of each month, sometimes earlier, sometime later, sometimes not at all (but I do let you know ahead of time if this is the case).

If you'd like me to publish a workshop you will be teaching in the calendar would you send me the following information: title of workshop, description of workshop, link to workshop and how to registration (probably most important bit of information as I use the information from the site I land on to populate the calendar with the rest of the information) and pictures of finished sample (optional)

I do not use your information for purposes outside of sharing this newsletter, workshop calendar and special announcements relating to workshops. I will not share your email address or any other personal information you have shared with me, with anyone. To subscribe, unsubscribe or view this newsletter online use the link below.
