Book & Paper Arts Calendar Updates - October 7, 2018
Hello everyone,
I have added purple entries for shows to see (and previously the lime green for newly found workshops). The calendar is very information dense. Is this too much? Should these entries remain in "Save the date" and "Things to do" area below?
Kind of short notice but this evening's launch of a Falcon 9 rocket from Vandenberg AFB appears to be on schedule. Liftoff is set for 7:22 pm Pacific Time. The event should be impressive and visible from as far away as Petaluma, Sacramento, and Lake Tahoe, California; western Nevada; Phoenix, Arizona; and northwest Mexico. If it doesn't happen tonight then it would be Thu Oct 11 for the launch.
Have you received your Hedi Kyle book? I haven't dared open mine! I have barely breathed on it. Where the heck is my pedestal? I do love that the dust jacket has a dust jacket folded asymmetrically so that the word "FOLD" is in 2 colors for the font and paper. It is so very Hedi! The way I figure it I need to get another 2 of her books - one to look at, one to keep pristine and one for Hedi to sign. So this is where I break the news that Hedi is holding a workshop at the ArtYard in Frenchtown, NJ, November 17 - 18, 2018 (please see the calendar entry for that).
Other than that I hope you having a great October so far. The leaves are starting to turn, the nights are getting chilly and you just want to put on your flannel PJs and binge watch something! If you are getting the day off on Monday, Oct 8, and are in CA have a "Happy Indigenous People's Day". If you are not in CA, "Happy Columbus Day". If you have to work here's to a "Happy Monday"!

Keep in mind that every first Sunday at Oceanside Museum of Art (Oceanside, CA), during the Coffee & Conversation they invite you peruse the "Art Materials Swap". Do you have left over, unwanted art materials just gathering dust in the studio and wished that you could find someone who could use such materials? Well here is your opportunity, bring your extra art materials, place them on the Art Materials Swap table and leave them for another anxious artist to take home to their studio. All artists are welcome to bring materials and take materials from the table. "You don't have to donate in order to appreciate!" All donated materials are up for grabs for everyone. Please Note: All materials left at the end of the session will be donated or disposed.

Interesting structures being used as calendars but could be used as books? This artist, Mike Clements, is in the UK. If you happen to be in Manchester on October 20, 2018 check out his work at the Manchester Artists’ Book Fair at Chapter One Book.
Since being introduced to paper cutting by Bhavna Mehta (please Dec 6 - 7 in the calendar for her next workshop) I have a profound appreciation of the patience and skill it takes to produce these amazing works. Making a slipcase is an important skill for any bookbinder as they protect and present books in an attractive way. Download article here. The "Skin Deep" e-magazine appears to also be another source for all things bookbinding!
