Book & Paper Arts Calendar Updates - October 29, 2019
Hello everybody,
Don't you love technology that propels us in our every day lives? One minute you are in Hawaii and 5 hours later you are back in CA! For our flight crew it was just another work day. They flew out of LA at 11am and are back in LA after 11pm. They get about a break for an hour in Kona so they can stretch their legs and maybe get some local ice cream (Tropical Dreams made on the Big Island at Lalamilo Farms) from the news stand at the Kona airport. Did you know that flight attendants only get paid when the doors on the plane are closed?
The 2 weeks in mid-October we were on the Big Island just flew by! We had a precocious 3-month old black kitten with green and gold eyes named Luca to look after as well as house sit. Bill and he became best buddies and would play & nap together! I was most excited to finally see a pueo, a(n?) Hawaiian owl, on old Saddle Road on the way to the north side to Hilo. I wanted to see the newest black sand beach so we could make our traditional Madame Pele offering of gin. We were running a little behind and so we ended up going down Leilani Ave (in Leilani Estates - ground zero for the eruption last year) and stopped when we saw very high ridges of lava. We made our offering and then noticed a really huge hill in the distance and we wondered, "Was that Fissure 8?" The vent that pumped out so much lava that if you built a 2-lane highway between Boston and Seattle it would be 70 feet high? When I checked the USGS maps I found out it WAS Fissure 8!! We were less than 1000 ft from it. It was deceiving how massive it was. Only 100 feet tall now at the height of the eruption it was 180 feet tall and spewing lava out over 250 feet in the air with the roar of jet engines. The base looked like it was about 650 - 700 feet wide. Just amazing! I was in awe! Would it be crazy to buy an acre lot in Leilani Estates just so I could explore cooled lava features on the surface?
Another tradition of mine is to get calendars to put around the house. One of my favorite calendars is Helen Hiebert's calendar. Not only do you get a calendar but you also get to make lovely things with the paper pak curated by Helen! The 2020 calendar will have 2 of my favorite origami teachers - Hedi Kyle and Gina Pisello (fellow San Diego Book Arts'er) as well as other amazing artists - Marianne Petit, Lore Spivey, Arnold Grummer’s - and, of course, Helen herself. I received my calendar yesterday and can't wait to check it out!
The year is winding down to a close. What future adventures can I entice you to take in the world of book and paper arts?
Hope to see you in a future workshop!
