Book & Paper Arts Calendar Updates - October 22, 2021

Hello everyone,

I have made a small addition to each calendar entry description just under "Schedule:" area going forward. A time zone converter has been added to check the time of the workshop happening in another part of the world or US. You can add that city, your town, change the date and time and voila! The correct time and date for when the workshop will be happening where you are. So Guy Begbie (UK) added an additional online bookbinding workshop starting Nov 4 - Dec 1 at a more reasonable time for those of us in the US!

During one of the many times I updated the draft of this newsletter it started to rain and thunder (not the scary, sharp crackly bursts but the growly kind). It got dark after lunch and finally started to rain 4 hours later. I love that smell when the rain first hits the ground - petrichor. It doesn't rain a lot in California and when it does I look forward to taking a nap or falling asleep to the sound of falling rain. It has also been lovely this month to see Venus, Saturn and Jupiter in the night skies after dinner with friends or merely peering out the bedroom window to figure what flying vehicle going by is sounding like a cross between a helicopter and a train in the sky with a huge distance between the navigation and landing lights. So if you see someone in a car next to you looking up it might be me. I continue to take my sustenance looking out the window: bedroom or car!

Be well, curious and creative!

Bits & bobs about paper/books/tips/trips/etc.

Back in the April 2021 newsletter I mentioned Elbel Libro Bookbinding calling for an expanding slipcase design. They received 22 submissions from around the world. The jury consisting of Benjamin Elbel, Nadine Werner and Marja Wilgenkamp (only 3 of my favorite bookbinders in Europe!) selected a winner on October 9. Here is your chance to vote on your favorite slipcase from the top 10 (videos included) as the public favorite and is due by Oct 30, 2021. I voted and hope you do, too!

Elissa Campbell will be launching her Finding Closure 101 online class where she will be teaching 5 closures. Enrollment opens Oct 21, 2021 (please see calendar). In the meantime she is offering one of her lecture for free - why templates and jigs are awesome! To access video lecture sign up for this email list here (different from the one where you get her blog posts)

Ingenious way to fold square paper into thirds if you don't have a ruler handy (no more feeling of dread having to fold thirds)
John Neal Books maintains a list of continuously updated online calligraphy classes
Not exactly paper related but I would love to have this as a coffee table! I did try to talk Bill into getting it - should've tried harder! LOL!
Origami knight made from one sheet of paper with video - 68 square cm rice paper (almost 27 square inches) + 41 hours = 18 cm suite of armor - the pauldron area (shoulders) with the beautiful layering would be a fashion designer's dream
I am a sucker for anything miniature so check out these baskets made out of invasive plant species

Here is Jane LaFazio's latest journal - I am not usually into pink but when I am it is because I have run across pale pink peonies, like in Jane's journal, which I just adore - also loved the 2 little accordion books she placed in the journal with more flowers for a delightful surprise

Want to transform a paper bag into a pumpkin?

Another interesting way to create design with embroidery that can hold it's shape through this process of using water soluble fabric
Attending Book Arts meetings are dangerous when you learn about new and different kinds of paper you can use for making book and other things paper related. Found out about tea filter paper which can take a fold and be used as backing for making your own bookcloth; deli paper (look for these at Smart & Final, Costco and Amazon) not only for sandwiches but to add a level of transparency/translucence to your text on your pages; unpasted wallpaper lining paper (look in Home Depot or Amazon) that is good for folding and holds up well for misting color on it.
Always love a useful, beautiful and ingenious Hedi Kyle structure (I featured this fold in the April newsletter but it is Hedi!) - found 3 videos to help you fold her Diagonal Pocket Fold that have hints and tips to help with the folding: Kat Kirby, Nancy Akerly and Karen Thomas. If you have her book, Art of the Fold, it is on page 116

Variation on a blizzard fold by Hedi Kyle called a blizzard pocket (page 88 in Art of the Fold) folded by Peter Baumgartner which he called a leporello

Interested in reading a good story for a video? STAY AWAKE is the newest Vimeo Channel series from the Jaffe Center for Book Arts premiering later this fall. Here is the concept page for the series. To get your story on the air would you write to John Cutrone at at jcutrone@fau.edu?

One of my favorite tools is a bonefolder (I even have a tiny 2" version I carry in my purse) and have several in different materials and shapes - here is a short guide by Rachel Hazell to using this satisfyingly versatile tool, bringing a tactile pleasure to your fingertips

I had the opportunity to attend a virtual workshop (about writing as decoration) with Jean Kropper and found a video on her demonstrating meditative drawing

  • The time listed as you mouse over or press each entry or at the top of the entry when opened will be in the time zone of the listing organization. If it is a virtual/online workshop the times for other time zones will also be listed in the Description area along with a time converter

  • There is no difference between In-person1 (blue entries) and In-person2 (red entries) or Online1 (orange entries) and Online2 (light teal entries), just a way to visually separate workshops; purple entries are for festivals or conferences; yellow are public online meetings from various book arts guilds and museums; anything with ** are newly found workshops, meetings, presentations, etc. since the last newsletter was sent out

  • To change views in the calendar: on laptop/PC/tablet locate the 3 bar button [≡] upper right corner and select .. Day .. Week .. Month .. Agenda, List - on cellphone locate 3 bar button and select the down arrow button to the left of it and make your selection as above

  •  To move backwards or forwards in time in the calendar: on laptop/PC/tablet locate "Today" in the upper left corner and click on the single left facing arrow to back one time period (based on what view you have selected) and single right facing arrow to move one time period forward - on cellphone locate the ">>" button and to the right of that will be the single left & right facing arrow

  • Look for magnifying glass on your screen to do a Search by state, town, instructor name, time zone, keyword, etc. If one class is sold out search for a keyword from that class to see if another is available, for example, "masu" or "Sheehy". Do use the organizations workshop calendar listed in each calendar entry to see other disciplines are being offered

  • The calendar is updated about once a week (unless the wifi is spotty while traveling or am having fatigue issues) and you have 24x7 access to it

  • You can add any calendar entry to your own personal calendar to help you keep track of meetings and workshops you will be attending. On any entry either right click or touch & hold down your finger on the selected entry for a couple of seconds, select Share then select which calendar (Google, iCal, Outlook) you wish to add to.
