Book & Paper Arts Calendar Updates - November 26, 2022

Hello everyone,

  • The newsletter will now be sent out from the Buttondown platform - it will be easier to maintain the subscriber list, reduce the possibility of the newsletter ending up in your spam folder, better readability on various devices, easier subscription and unsubscription and other newslettery things to look forward to. Do let me know about broken or inaccurate links, erroneous dates, etc. as fixing that will be much easier now as well

  • Congratulations to Judy B who was the first to answer my question about Madame Pele’s favorite tipple - gin - in the October newsletter. An honorable mention goes out to Yolanda A as well. They both received papers from my stash!

  • FOBA is always looking for board members who can provide guidance and expertise in all aspects of planning and managing a conference. Get Involved with FOBA

Musings and Meanderings

Coming up to the holiday season has put me in an introspective mood. As part of this introspection I have been doing a little bit of organizing in the room where I tend to accumulate boxes both empty and unopened (yes, I am that person - sigh!). Some empty boxes have been used as a damper between the washer and dryer (they are rattling a bit more as they get older) and going through the unopened boxes has been like having several birthdays and Christmas all rolled into one! So win-win! All this organizing has actually freed up space for snacks in one of my drawers. Nice to have them in one place and within easy reach (maybe a little too tempting). Another win!

A memory was jogged when I was looking through a website and noticed their mission statement. I had written one for myself many years ago when I thought I was going to be laid off back in 2007 (shades of what is happening last quarter 2022). I even found a list of things I thought I could make & sell in the event I had to pivot so a mission statement seemed critical to focus on what the heck I was going to do!

So who was I if I was not Rose & Howard’s daughter, Andre & Paul’s sister, Bill’s fiancée, a member of the world wide server team, a technical writer, a departmental app developer? I went digging for that mission statement in my old inspiration and idea notebooks. I found that I went from “providing delight and enjoyment through the receiving and giving of uniquely designed and distinctive hand crafted cards using amazing papers and materials from all over the world” to what my signature block mentions in each newsletter since February 2021.

The idea of a signature block started in January and after a few iterations it debuted the next month. Strange but I thought I’d had it longer. I am still tweaking it as I find out more about myself (and confer with other people whose signature blocks I admire - thank you, Helen S). It is gratifying to know that I continue to adore all things paper thanks to my mother introducing me to origami as a child.

I have also reflected back on the past year and know how lucky I have been to have been able to share my joys and grief with you and being so thankful for the tremendous support you’ve given me in return. I am thankful for each and everyone of you and wish you tranquility and serenity this holiday season and beyond.
