Book & Paper Arts Calendar Updates - November 21, 2020

Hello everybody,

We went to the desert to catch the Orionid meteor shower in late October. Before sunset we went to "catch" the metal sculptures at Galleta Meadows in Borrego Springs. The ocotillo surprised me with blooms of red at the tips of their branches giving a splash of color to the otherwise stark desert landscape. The cholla cactus were also blooming with tiny white flowers. I kept a respectful distance from them as I admired their needles. It is so dark in Borrego Springs that you can see the sword of Orion and that fuzzy spot in the sword - the Orion nebula! The coyotes howling and my alarm woke me up 2 hours before sunrise so we could go meteor hunting. Appropriately the first meteor I saw as we were leaving the hotel to go to a even darker spot streaked right through the Orion constellation. It was the longest and brightest that early morning. The buzz of electricity going through the power lines serenaded us as we watched for the Orionids - leftover debris from Halley's Comet. Venus rising in the east and Mars (2nd brightest object in the sky then after Venus) setting in the west directly opposite each other in the sky were also serene accompaniments. By the time we saw the ISS (International Space Station) 30 minutes before sunrise it was already difficult to make out the Orion constellation. Only Rigel (his foot) and Betelgeuse (his shoulder) were visible and by the time we could no longer see the ISS six minutes later the stars had all winked out in the beginning of a new day.

Hope you are staying safe, well and creative - Jade

Bits & bobs about paper/books/tips/trips/etc.

Sign of the times and I hope good for a chuckle! Robot vacuum cleaner texts for help after getting tangled up in toilet paper. I call mine Poe Poe Mea and I think it means round thing in Hawaiian but I could be so very wrong! And he is so old that he does not text - he just gets stuck underneath counters, furniture and in corners and beeps for help!

The holidays are approaching and to help with that here is the ultimate gift roundup - kitchen, fitness, gaming, living room, general tech gifts, miscellaneous
What are physical books still for? "The Book Makers" documentary being streamed on PBS.org pulls back the curtain on the people who are keeping books alive in the 21st century - the remarkable resilience of books. Personally I love reading books - the whole turning of the page - the action and the sound, your own way of bookmarking whether dogeared or using a beautiful bookmark or whatever is available, the feel and smell of the page, the pause as you absorb the words or reread them again - it is a whole experience!

A nice read about the Kalamazoo Book Arts Center. I do adore their annual illustrated accordion exhibits. Their next one will be from Apr 2 - June 11, 2021. Watch for the call to exhibit in an upcoming update

Exploring Ed Ruscha's archives (thanks to the Getty Research Institute) about Sunset Blvd - choose different years, rides (the Vanagon rules!) and sides of the street
Postcard-perfect scenes - constructed from memory and scraps of paper - I knew there was a reason why I collected postcards and business cards from places and businesses I have visited

Did you want to try something different or maybe you know someone who might want to try something different? Here is a list of crafty projects to spark imagination

The Morgan Conservatory website now features introductory papermaking, letterpress, and bookbinding videos, as well as behind the scenes of our facilities. Stay tuned for more virtual classes coming soon

Japanese artist Hiroku Saito creates incredible paper art called Kiri-e or Kirigami - staggeringly elaborate and beautiful!
Italian artist/designer/inventor Bruno Munari published his “Libro Illeggibile” in 1949. Watching the video about the seventh (7th) edition of  Libro Illegibile and An Unreadable Quadat Print made me think about pages in quite a different way. The video for Libro Illegibile also includes instruction on how to make your own copy of this book!

Helen Hiebert's podcast episode with Susan Joy Share

Towards the end of every year I get excited about Helen Hiebert's upcoming calendar! She has produced wonderful calendars that I collect and also give away. This year she has announced that she will be going online with the Paper Year and I am looking forward to the online sessions to make fun creations with her and 4 guest paper/book artists. You will have a choice of 2 option to participate. Here is a video about her upcoming Paper Year

A murmuration of starlings in exquisite flight. I played the video over some music I was listening to and it did not matter what I was listening the starlings seemed to move to it. From Søren Solkær’s ongoing project, BlackSun, documents one of nature’s most mesmerizing phenomena captured in the marshlands of southern Denmark

====================Resources

  • A list of organizations from where I gather my information - Word document or PDF document - is maintained in my Dropbox account. This list is always being updated as I find or am told about new organizations and instructors

  • Centralized area for hundreds of opportunities for artists - mostly residencies, some grant funding & galleries compiled by one person to encourage community. International, but with a US-lens. Assembled and maintained by Everest Pipkin - from US so it leans that way. You can also help by sending opportunities to add - see how to in spreadsheet.

  • Residencies in many different mediums. See if one of these fit you.

  • Online juried shows - https://www.onlinejuriedshows.com/preDefault.aspx
