Book & Paper Arts Calendar Updates - November 13, 2018
Hello everyone,
Good news! The calendar now allows me to add an image without having to first upload it to Dropbox! So expect pictures when I find them. I will be house sitting on the Big Island (BI) of Hawaii from Nov 14 - Dec 3. I know tough job but someone has to do it. We are so lucky that this landed in our laps as you know I just love being on the BI. So the next update will probably be after Dec 9 (depending on jet lag). This trip will give me a chance to check out previously visited beaches and un-visited ones for beach combing! It may be raining while we are there (may even be thundering on T-day) but it is all good!
Among the many things that I collect I also collect intangibles like words; unusual words like exsanguinate (only ever used once in conversation), defenestration (ditto), extemporaneous (never), etc.; collective animal nouns, for example, a murder of crows, a crash of rhinoceros, a glaring of cats, a parliament of owls, a murmuration of starlings, a business of ferrets (although I hear they are usually up to no good :p) etc.; unusual animal baby names, for example, cria (baby llama, alapaca, vicuna), leveret (baby hare), my most favorite, a puggle (baby echidna or platypus, you know, monotremes - another unusual word!), etc.
Have you seen "Crazy Rich Asians"? If you get the urge to go to Singapore (there is a direct flight from LAX after Nov 2 and SFO on Singapore Airlines, even Seattle now but not sure if it is a direct flight!) here is a foodie guide - https://tinyurl.com/y6w2wb8w. More yummy food here. If you'd rather stay local try the laksa at Borneo Kalimantan in Alhambra, CA. Use yelp to look for Malaysian, Singaporean and Indonesian restaurants close to where you are. Here are suggestions for the best times to travel to SE Asia but just expect it to be hot and humid with lots of ducking into an airconditioned buildings, stores or malls!

All things internet ...
The Library of Congress announced that it "will make 25 million records from its catalog available for the public to download." Prior to this, the records—which include books and serials, music and manuscripts, and maps and visual materials spanning from 1968 to 2014—have only been accessible through a paid subscription. These files will be available for free download on [the Library of Congress site] and are also available on data.gov. Also free images from Getty Images provided you use embed code provided by the company.
If you love to watch movies in the movie theater check out this movie pass app.
If you love Japan and have an iPhone perhaps you would like to have a phone case with renditions from several locations in Tokyo?
Architectural details turned into visual puns. Humorous contextual street signs (wish they were real!). More here and here.

All things paper
Wow! origami. Would you decorate an origami crane for 1000 days?

Amazing paper sculptures!
Rolled paper art. Rolled paper sculptures. More here. A variation on the rolled paper (what I thought were stitches to hold the paper in place is actually where the paper was rolled - a very cool effect). Wouldn't these be fun on one of your walls?

All things Hedi
A call for exhibition by Abecedarian Artists Books based on Hedi's book - Art of the Fold - deadline Dec 17, 2018
Because I love Hedi Kyle so much - a podcast with one of my favorite paper people here. I so want to take Helen's paper retreat at Red Cliff, CO!
Gina has been making Hedi structures and putting her spin on it - so wonderful!
In depth review of Hedi's book (https://books-on-books.com/2018/09/24/bookmarking-book-art-hedi-kyles-the-art-of-the-fold-how-to-make-innovative-books-and-paper-structures/)
