Book & Paper Arts Calendar Updates - May 27, 2023

Aloha kakou,

  • 2023 summer and fall courses for American Academy of Bookbinding are open

  • I am considering re-arranging the sections with the About the Calendar section to go after the Musings section (especially since you can jump directly to your favorite section around the newsletter online) and removing the Opportunities section as teaching opportunities are already a part of the resource list.

  • I am so lucky and happy to be back on the Big Island of Hawai’i house sitting, getting re-acquainted with the cats in the house (I am their glorified doorman), working on my ha (breath), enjoying the many moods of my favorite volcano, Maunakea, and catching up with all our favorite people on the island. When the island came into view I was delighted to see some patches of snow still on the summit of Maunakea.

  • What plans do you have for the summer? Will you be practicing dolce far niente? The sweetness of doing nothing? Or will you be taking advantage of every minute of sunshine? Whatever you do I hope you have some quality time for yourself.

Musings and Meanderings

I am a night owl and I tend to stay up at night working on this newsletter, homework from or prep for workshops, trip planning, making the rare handmade card, etc. I wear a headset (Bill is asleep by 8pm and awake by 2am) to watch YouTube videos or binge watch Great British Bake Off (GBBO). It really does not matter what I watch as it is just background noise. However when YouTube is on I key in on certain words and I stop what I am doing when my brain processes interesting words like paper, origami, book, box, Hawai’i, super massive black holes, etc. Sometimes past the midnight hour our resident owl’s hooting in the tree closest to our bedroom window breaks through the muffling effects of the headphones and then I hear him loud and clear. I wonder who he is talking to? Maybe I should learn to speak owl like I learned how to speak chicken on Kauai. I am learning how to speak lion from the Lion Whisperer channel on YouTube. I believe I am a good parrot as I have noticed that people seem to think I am fluent in many languages even though I barely speak a word or 2 in most of them. I tend to lapse into whatever accent I hear around me. Pidgin in Hawai’i, a Southern drawl when I am in Houston and British clip after watching GBBO. It has seemed to work so far for me especially here in on the Big Island - they think I am from Honolulu here on a holoholo (vacation). I’d like to think I hear more personal stories about what is going on around the island. I wonder if it helps that I seem to get more and more brown when I am here even though I wear sunscreen and a hat.

This is a short musings as I do want to get out the newsletter. I love that technology has allowed me to work on my newsletter, take or monitor a zoom class no matter where I am. Then again I also loved it when we were in the air and I was not connected and I enjoyed catching up to movies (or re-watching favorite ones) and reading the inflight magazine. Is there any place in the world where you are not connected to the internet?

See you next month.
