Book & Paper Arts Calendar Updates - May 21, 2021

Hello everyone,

My husband's computer is getting a little on the old side and is starting to show its age - 6 years (in computer years 24)! It was starting to protest while it is going through Windows updates (shudder!) and so researched looking for a replacement computer for him. I try to get as much bang for our buck by getting as fast or faster CPU, double the RAM, and the same amount or more in hard drive size but in SSD (solid state drive) format.  I don't do tech support any more but my PC guy recommends Dell (whether for a desktop or laptop) but honestly go with the brand you are happy with and has the best customer service. I would recommend spending your money on more RAM, computer speed then hard drive.

I had always thought that Shizen paper was Japanese but it is an American brand based in Missouri made in India & Thailand. I first came across these papers at Cost Plus World Markets and at that one art supply place in any small town we visit - such rich, lush and beautiful colors and textures! Here is a link to how they make it and their paper catalog.

As a weird aside I have been learning how to pronounce the name of the town, well, more like a small village with the longest name in Wales (those double "ll"s are quite the tongue displacement) - Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch and trying to figure out how to use the longest word - pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis - in a conversation. There I go collecting words again, like exsanguination, defenestration and kerfuffle. Do you have a favorite word?

Thanks to Jane Carlin from PSBA inviting me to chat about the Book and Paper Arts Workshop calendar and newsletter. I had an amazing time talking about the calendar, newsletter and process and future possibilities of the calendar. Everyone attending was warm and supportive with the nicest things to say (that made me blush). Thank you everyone that have enjoyed this newsletter and the calendar!

Hope you are staying safe, sane, well and creative!

  • The time listed as you mouse over each entry or at the top of the entry when opened will be Pacific Time with the original & other times listed in the Description area

  • There is no difference between Calendar 1 (blue entries) and 2 (red entries), just a way to visually separate in-person workshops; orange and light teal (also visual separation) entries are online workshops; light green ones are the latest workshops found since the last email update; purple entries are for festivals or conferences;  yellow are public online meetings from various book arts guilds and museums

  • You can do a search (magnifying glass search button in upper right of screen) by state, town, instructor name, time zone, etc. If it is the calendar you can search on it. If one class is sold out search for a keyword to see if another is available, for example, "masu" or "Sheehy". Do use the organizations workshop calendar to see what else is being offered

Bits & bobs about paper/books/tips/trips/etc.
Just found out about an amazing project between scientists and book artists ( had seen the tip of the iceberg with Suze Woolf's virtual art exhibit presented by Puget Sound Book Artists mentioned in the September 2020 newsletter) called Science Stories: A Collaboration of Book Artists and Scientists. Science Stories is a unique project that brings together Pacific Northwest scientists and book artists with the end result being the creation of engaging and unique artists’ books that offer new ways to interpret science and to tell a story

One of my favorite teachers at SFCB is Jennie Hinchcliff (I may need a refresher on the crossed structure binding!) and since the beginning of the year has been producing a podcast called Senders Receive which highlights mail artists and postal moderns. Listen to their stories at the usual podcast places, as well as online. Jennie also has a flickr photo pool called SF's Correspondence Co-op where you can photos of incoming/outgoing mail art and correspondence
I often wished I had names that had more than one syllable (my first, middle and last name are all one only). But imagine having this guy's name - possible the longest in the world?
Learn more about North Bennet Street School (NBSS) "In the Making",  new public programs series where we connect with a range of new voices, fields, and perspectives and view a full list of participants, at the series homepage here

I have not included workshops from California Rare Book School (a continuing education program dedicated to providing the knowledge and skills required by professionals working in all aspects of the rare book community, and for students interested in entering the field). If you are interested here is the link to their 2021 course schedule (all virtual)

One of my favorite go to interactive and sculptural handmade cards - a flower pop-up card. Here is another

Bainbridge Island Museum of Art’s (BIMA) - Artist's Books Unshelved:

Would you like to print your own dot grid paper? Try  http://gridzzly.com/ andhttps://www.printablepaper.net/, both of which allow you to print the paper you want for your textblocks at home

Have always been fascinated by Daniel Kelm and his experimentations with book structures, bindings and other things. Here is a show & tell and workshop tour.

DB UK Bookbinding Competition online exhibition is now available for viewing

Vintage Page Designs interviewed Nancy Akerly who passionate about everything paper (a kindred spirit!) - https://youtu.be/qWpR1SAqOCM

Would this make a great tiny studio? Check out this little tiny home ... I meant studio

If you are looking for prompts for creating, Editions Studio (are you book enough) and Brooklyn Art Library (sketch prompt - sign up for one or follow their instagram) have them and could probably be stretch out to making books, drawing, writing, calligraphy, etc.
