Book & Paper Arts Calendar Updates - June 21, 2021

Hello everyone,

Timing is everything isn't it? I was in CA and missed the lunar eclipse in Hawaii and when I was in Hawaii I missed the annular solar eclipse in CA. The lava lake in Volcano National Park also stopped erupting and crusted over the day we got there. Only wisps of smoke to indicate there is still magma under that crust. Sigh! Still it was a lovely, chill trip and will be most happy to return knowing that there is still more to explore on the Big Island of Hawaii! I would love to spend more time on the south side of the island next time and satisfy the amateur volcanologist in me! The best compliment we got on the island? The locals thought we already lived there! Sigh! I learned to be the doorman for the cat, Luca. The cat always seemed to be on the wrong side of the door. I was merely the facilitator of his ingress and egress while speaking to him in as many languages and accents that I knew. Not sure who was more amused but I suspect I was!

With the emergence of the Brood X or Great Eastern Brood cicadas I had read a John Berger quote in one of my many newsletters -  "Do you know the legend about cicadas? They say they are the souls of poets who cannot keep quiet because, when they were alive, they never wrote the poems they wanted to.” Now that is a LOT of unwritten poems! Chocolate covered cicadas, anyone?

With things opening up and more in-person workshops happening please be sure to check what the organizations requirements are for attending a workshop. From what I have seen most organizations will have their COVID-19 requirements front and center.

Hope you are staying safe, sane, well and creative!

Me ke aloha nui - Jade

About the calendar

Link to the calendar: https://teamup.com/ksd9e12a80c3878ba5 (If the link is not working copy and paste it to your browser)

  • The time listed as you mouse over each entry or at the top of the entry when opened will be Pacific Time with the original & other times listed in the Description area for online workshops and that location's time for in-person workshops

  • There is no difference between In-person1 (blue entries) and In-person2 (red entries), just a way to visually separate in-person workshops; Online1 (orange) and Online2 (light teal) are also visual separations for online workshop entries; light green ones are the latest workshops found since the last email update; purple entries are for festivals or conferences;  yellow are public online meetings from various book arts guilds and museums; anything with ** are newly found calendar entries

  • You can do a search (look for magnifying glass on your screen) by state, town, instructor name, time zone, keyword, etc. If it is the calendar you can search on it. If one class is sold out search for a keyword from that class to see if another is available, for example, "masu" or "Sheehy". Do use the organizations workshop calendar listed in each calendar entry to see what else is being offered

  • Monthly view is best viewed using a larger monitor with desktop/laptop. To change view look for Scheduler, Day, ... Month ... Agenda, List in upper right corner of screen and click on appropriate view

  • If using cell, mobile or smart phone change view to List, Day or Agenda view using button with the down arrow in upper right corner of screen

  • Agenda (list view from current day going forward) or List (list view for current week/month going forward)

  • The calendar is updated at least once a week and you have 24x7 access to it

  • Let me know about any other workshops to include in the calendar and any organizations whose newsletter I should be receiving for workshop monitoring.

Resources

  • A list of organizations from where I gather my information - Word document or PDF document - is maintained in my Dropbox account. This list is always being updated as I find or am told about new organizations and instructors (you do not need to create an account to access this information)

  • A list of my favorite paper places, both online and brick & mortar locations - Word or PDF - is maintained in my Dropbox account (I am not affiliated, associated, authorized, endorsed by, or in any way officially connected with any of the companies listed. I merely enjoy their products and fantasize about what I can buy,)

  • Centralized area for hundreds of opportunities for artists - mostly residencies, some grant funding & galleries compiled by one person to encourage community. International, but with a US-lens. Assembled and maintained by Everest Pipkin - from US so it leans that way. You can also help by sending opportunities to add - see how to in spreadsheet.

  • Residencies in many different mediums. See if one of these fit you.

  • Online juried shows - https://www.onlinejuriedshows.com/preDefault.aspx

  • Current art calls for entry list - all over US: https://www.entrythingy.com/forartists_calls (you will need to create an account to access the information)
