Book & Paper Arts Calendar Updates - July 27, 2019
Hello everyone,
What a quick turn around trip to FOBA it was for us! Ten days in which we traveled through and stayed (all Hampton Inn and Suites!) in: Red Bluff, CA; Salem, OR (best Wagyu ribeye ever!); Tacoma, WA (to relish Puget Sound Book Arts exhibit at U of Puget Sound, Chihuly's Bridge of Glass, Bainbridge Island Museum of Art Artist Books Collection, ferry to Seattle and, of course, chocolate from Seattle Chocolate!); Hilsboro, OR (for FOBA - great Hawaiian food, trade show, artist fair and workshops, oh my!); Redding, CA (Mt. Shasta still covered in snow!); Arroyo Grande, CA (to celebrate a friend's retirement) and finally home just in time to get my hair cut! Phew! This trip made me appreciate how much the state of California grows - almonds, sunflowers, rice (2nd highest producer after Arkansas), mandarins, from what we could see. Bill also tells me that we put over 3,500 miles on the Honda HR-V! Cruise control for great mileage.
We will be staying put for a while - enjoyed a museum outing to the Bowers Museum in Santa Ana to check out a Guo Pei exhibit. Some of her amazing creations did remind me of origami and books. You had to look at every part of the dresses including underneath some times so you wouldn't miss any of her whimsical sumptuous touches. The Perseids meteor shower maybe next with an overnight stay in Borrego Springs to watch the meteors in the cool of the night and explore Breceda's metal sculptures in the cool of the morning. Map for sculptures can be found here (scroll down).
Here's hoping you have the opportunity to take a workshop or 2!
Sections below: Things to see or do/If you happen to be in the area; All things paper/books/tips (* there is a giveaway in this section *); Upcoming classes (usually west coast or online); Newly found workshops; Housekeeping.

I came across the Art-o-Mat vending machines that were cigarette vending machines in a previous life but now vending art back in 2016 when in Sacramento for a tour of Fred Uhl Ball's iconic enamel pieces and the enamel exhibit at the Crocker Museum. Why enamel you ask? His mother, Kathryn Uhl Ball, illustrated my name sake's first book, "Fifth Chinese Daughter". This author started out in ceramics, wrote her books and worked in enamel. My father met her when she was on her 4 month speaking tour of Asia and remembered her enough to name his only daughter for her 9 years later! The 1st person to figure out my middle name gets a prize! Possible selections include 1/2 sheet Madeleine Durham paste paper, a chunky piece of Seaham/Davenport glass (clear but well frosted), a japanese puzzle box (similar but brown instead - ignore the price), or 30 count pak of 2-ply black Museum & Conservation Board 5"x7" (or 25 count pak of 4-ply white 5.25"x7.25"). Looking up the website inspired to locate a nearby one in a beauty salon in Costa Mesa after our monthly find a new place for breakfast
