Book & Paper Arts Calendar Updates - July 23, 2021

Hello everyone,

Small announcement about the newsletter - the teaching and residency opportunities have been moved below the Upcoming classes to their own section. I am seeing many more organizations asking for teachers either for virtual or in person workshops and thought that should be it's own separate section. I am also encouraging you to go to the calendar to look for upcoming classes so the Upcoming classes section will be weirdly empty. Let me know if you would like a Zoom class to chat about the ins and outs of the calendar.

Some sad news - BookArtsLA will be closing its doors at the end of July. I will remember the workshops I took there most fondly. Not that it is book or paper arts related but I was also following a company called Simple Terra and I was hoping to put down roots in Hawaii (eventually) in several of their shipping container modules. They even shipped for free anywhere in the US including Hawaii! They, too, are victims of the pandemic.

We just got back from a 3-week driving trip through 9 states and put almost 4300 miles on our little Honda HR-V. I'll chat more about it in another update. Hope y'all are keeping cool and chill whether or not you are travelling.

Be well, curious and creative!

About the calendar

Link to the calendar: https://teamup.com/ksd9e12a80c3878ba5 (If the link is not working copy and paste it to your browser)

  • The time listed as you mouse over each entry or at the top of the entry when opened will be in the time zone of the listing organization. If it is a virtual workshop the times for other time zones will also be listed in the Description area

  • There is no difference between In-person1 (blue entries) and In-person2 (red entries), just a way to visually separate in person workshops; Online1 (orange) and Online2 (light teal) are also visual separations for online workshop entries; purple entries are for festivals or conferences;  yellow are public online meetings from various book arts guilds and museums; anything with ** are newly found calendar entries

  • You can do a search (look for magnifying glass on your screen) by state, town, instructor name, time zone, keyword, etc. If it is the calendar you can search on it. If one class is sold out search for a keyword from that class to see if another is available, for example, "masu" or "Sheehy". Do use the organizations workshop calendar listed in each calendar entry to see what else is being offered

  • Monthly view is best viewed using a larger monitor with desktop or laptop. To change view look for Scheduler, Day, ... Month ... Agenda, List in upper right corner of screen and click on appropriate view

  • If using cell, mobile or smart phone change view to List, Day or Agenda view using button with the down arrow in upper right corner of screen

  • Agenda (list view from current day going forward) or List (list view for current week/month going forward)

  • The calendar is updated at least once a week (unless the wifi is spotty while traveling) and you have 24x7 access to it

It has been hot, so very hot! The heat begs you to be close to water. I thought about taking up fly fishing after watching the fishermen in the Blackfoot and Madison rivers in Idaho. Upcoming classes in the calendar. Use the List or Agenda view (see About the calendar above) to see a complete list of workshops and meetings going forward. Workshops found since the last update show a ** in the title of the workshop. Please check for registration close dates, if the workshop is full/closed/sold out or if it is virtual or in-person.

I'd like to encourage you to explore the calendar using the List or Agenda views using the link above and to use a larger viewing area like a laptop or desktop monitor. I wonder if I should have a Zoom class to show what the calendar can do? I normally don't mind the double work (usually providing the date, title and link here even though the information is already in the calendar) but with more than 75 entries lately it has become more demanding and I would like to go back to enjoying the research that goes back into this newsletter and calendar and getting it out to you in a more timely manner (a couple of days later than I would prefer due to trip, fatigue levels and other bits of life happening). Thank you for understanding.
