The week before we left I let a couple of the cats get closer as I thought perhaps this might be last time we would be house sitting for this person. Punky, the one indoor cat, seemed to sense this and started hanging out with me in the TV room even putting his paw on top of my hand. He must have been missing his person and I didn't mind his company and purring. Momo, the outside cat who belongs to someone else and was fed on the front porch started jumping into my lap and I made it a point to hang out with him at least once a day after that. Luca, the original cat and now only came in for meals and was extremely skittish, seemed to remember he once liked to drink from the faucet in the guest bathroom but only did that once towards the end of our stay. I miss those darn cats! Or do I miss the purrs?

Before leaving we also went on a rainbow eucalyptus tree hunt and found the one at University of Hawai'i, Hilo.

It takes about 75 minutes to drive from where we were staying to Hilo using Saddle Road - my favorite way to get there as you end up driving between one dormant and one active volcano. I also finally gave in to my curiosity about high those roads got. To my surprise my elevation app registered over 6,750 feet (over 2,045m) - what?!? It was another rainy day and I was glad they "roughened" up parts the road going down hill towards Hilo. That tree was right beside the entrance to the university, next to a parking lot (handy) and incongruously sharing space with a futuristic sculpture called Makali'i (Pleiades). I had no idea what it was about then so I looked it up after the visit as I was trying to understand what was was going on. Now I see that it was basically a horizontal navigation map with all the lovely Hawaiian symbols for navigation that was then placed vertically - it felt a little awkward. An effort to reach the stars after using them for guidance? I do have a few more rainbow eucalyptus to locate but that will be for next time! We will definitely continue to visit whether we are house sitting or not.

When we got back from house sitting I started looking into making my own chia pudding with coconut milk (in powdered form that is rehydrated when needed - it keeps better). I was curious and had picked up some chia pudding from one of the supermarkets in Hilo and found it a tasty addition to my breakfast. Then I also remembered that I had one that was flavored with ube and not only was it very tasty (like an earthy vanilla) but I was also loving that purple color! A great advantage to making my own chia pudding - it allowed me to control the sweetness. The sugars I use add another depth of flavor to this somewhat healthy addition to breakfast and sometimes midnight snack. I have used gula melaka (a type of palm sugar), coconut sugar, jaggery (made from cane or palm sugar) - all are unrefined with varying degrees of smokiness and caramelly yuminess with a lower glycemic index. I also use these sugars in my morning coffee - a Jadespresso - 2 shots of espresso with 5 oz of steamed milk finished with a splash of cream. Before the espresso is brewed the cup will contain the unrefined sugar, a shake of cinammon and 2 drops of cardamom bitters (it depends on which coffee I am using as I also have orange bitters). It makes for a meditative morning routine.

I was unmotivated to fold after getting back - post vacation malaise perhaps? I have been trying to get back into folding froebel units and saw an appealing variation called the origami rose wreath with Origami Maniacs on YouTube (she is mentioned in the Bits and Bobs section) while figuring out which harmony papers work best - these papers are double sided colors with a contrasting solid color on one side and ombre on the other either in a circle or diamond pattern - check them out here - also happy to send samples if you'd like to try folding with these papers. I have lots in 5cm, 7.5 cm and 10 cm, about 3", 3.5" and 4". I am already thinking these could be used for the fronts of handmade cards. It takes a little bit to fold the base for these units but worth it once you see the results.

I finally put away the structures I made in workshops (btw - Daiso/Muji/Miniso/Dollar Tree are really good resources for storage containers that can be stacked with handles) since October of last year. Yes, the structures from that ZXB Series III workshop! I had a blast looking over them like being able to use the thingy that goes into a to-go coffee cup's sipping port - I hear it is called a splash stick aka stopper, coffee stopper, lid plug, spill stick, cup harpoon, and alphabet beads to hold things in place - they were starting to take over that corner by the printer and below my "antiques" vignette - odd collection of spurs, barb wire, a very tiny, old Singer sewing machine (I don't think it works), small cast iron pan, non working brownie camera and box, a rusty railroad spike, feathers I've picked up along the way, some favorite origami structures. While I was at it I also put away the Realm of Solids and Secret Lives of Cubes (SLoC) structures. The structures from that last session of SLoC were carried all over Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore and were a little worse for wear - some squashed points and tabs becoming unglued - not bad considering the adventures my backpack or luggage went through the least of which was moving in and out of humidity and airconditioning.

To stop missing Hawai'i too much and avoid putting things away like I should, I started watching math videos with Math Queen on YouTube. Yes, I know I have no need to do any more math but felt I needed to brush up on concepts I getting fuzzy on. I definitely needed the refresher after watching a few videos! She does have a soothing voice and explains things really well which my teachers in high school in Malaysia did not! So it feels like it is making more sense now. However I find that I am falling asleep to her videos while I am trying to understand concepts! LOL!

I had a tinge of nostalgia after watching a video about How the Thomas Guide reveals a changing California. The Tomas Guide is an old school book of maps for when GPS navigation systems were expensive, way before cell phones were commonplace let alone having GPS on them and when traffic snarls were announced on the radio so you knew which freeways to avoid. I believe the last time I used one was back in 2000 when trying to navigate to where Bill lived when we were first dating. I had to memorize the route. Yes, it was that far and over an hour away! It felt like I had to drive forever. I did love "reading" the Thomas Guide though, seeing what else was out there even back then but I did not "know" to plan for adventures just because I could. I am now, however, the proud owner of the 57th edition of the Thomas Guide for Los Angeles and Orange Counties. This puppy is about 11.5' x 8.5' x 1.5" (29cm x 22 cm x 4 cm) - a beast and I am not sure it will fit in my glove compartment.

I have a very small brag - I successfully programmed one of my favorite keyboards to put in a double page break between paragraphs by pressing one button and also pasting, what was copied, without keeping any of the text formatting on another. I collect all my information in quick notes in one app, collate it all in another and then copy it over to the newsletter platform. I noticed I kept doing this sequence of keystrokes over and over again when getting the newsletter ready to publish and wondered if there was a more efficient way. Luckily my favorite keyboard has such programmable macro keys, also a handle (yes, a handle) and a very cool volume knob.

Would it be utterly crazy to see if I could fly to Ann Arbor, MI for the weekend to check out Matthew Shlian's open studio day on August 9th? Doubtful I will do it but kinda fun to think about it!

• There is no difference between the colors you see, just a way to visually separate workshops but the more subdued colors are online workshops
• The calendar is updated as I come across information but you have 24x7 access to it
