Book & Paper Arts Calendar Updates - July 12, 2022

  • Hello everyone,

    • The newsletter is a little later than usual - I am recovering from covid contracted earlier in June. My nose is still runny, my eyes tear up way more than normal (what a strange residual effect from the virus) and my sense of smell is at 80% or 1000%

    • I am also going on an international trip for about a month from mid-July to mid-August. Was wondering if bringing my laptop with me was a good idea (heavy, heats up, not insured) and decided that a Chromebook (lighter, longer battery life and insured in case I loose it) would be a better traveling companion

    • This newsletter will be for June and July and the next newsletter will be out September (I will update the calendar as I find cool classes on afore mentioned Chromebook)

    • In the meantime my resource document of the organizations I have signed up for newsletters are available in my dropbox account - PDF document

    • I found the page where you can apply to teach at Virginia Center for the Book

    Stay well, creative and curious!

====================About the calendar - how to look for upcoming workshops and on-demand workshops

Link to the calendar: https://teamup.com/ksd9e12a80c3878ba5 (If the link is not working copy and paste it to your browser)

    • The time listed as you mouse over or press each entry or at the top of the entry when opened will be in the time zone of the listing organization. If a virtual/online workshop the times for other time zones will also be listed in the Description area along with a time zone converter

    • There is no difference between In-person1 (blue entries) and In-person2 (red entries) or Online1 (orange entries), Online2 (light teal entries) and Online3 (purple entries), just a way to visually separate workshops; pink entries are for festivals or conferences; yellow are public online meetings from various book arts guilds and museums; anything with ** are newly found workshops and events since the last newsletter was sent out

    • To change views in the calendar: on laptop/PC/tablet locate the 3 bar or hamburger button [≡] upper right corner and select .. Day .. Week .. Month .. Agenda, List - on cellphone locate 3 bar button and select the down arrow button to the left of it and make your selection as above

    •  To move backwards or forwards in time in the calendar: on laptop/PC/tablet locate "Today" in the upper left corner and click on the single left facing arrow to back one time period (based on what view you have selected) and single right facing arrow to move one time period forward - on cellphone locate the ">>" button and to the right of that will be the single left & right facing arrow

    • Look for magnifying glass on your screen to do a Search by state, town, instructor name, time zone, keyword, etc. If one class is sold out search for a keyword from that class to see if another is available, for example, "masu" or "Sheehy". Do use the organization's workshop calendar listed in each calendar entry to see other disciplines/mediums being offered

    • The calendar is updated as I come across information and you have 24x7 access to it

    • You can add any calendar entry to your own personal calendar to help you keep track of meetings and workshops you will be attending. On interested entry either right click or touch & hold down your finger on the selected entry for a couple of seconds, select Share then select which calendar (Google, iCal, Outlook) you wish to add to. Be sure to update the time to your local time zone

    Residencies

Open Studio (Toronto, Canada) - residency program with an interest in print - due Jun 28, 2022

    Musings and Meanderings

So I let my guard down and was extremely social for 5 days in early June and I am still not sure where I picked up the virus. I am just so grateful that even though Bill was with me throughout he was either asymptomatic or did not get it at all. I am also grateful that I was vaccinated and boostered. I took a test a day after I felt a sore throat coming on and thought that the hint of a line (more like a barely there shadow) was a negative result. Turns out I was wrong! I retested 4 days later and that 2nd red line was the brightest and ugliest red line I had ever seen. The sore throat went away after day 2 but then my nose got really runny leading me to believe I had allergies or a cold. I lost my sense of smell and taste completely for a day. I was actually using my memory of the food to imagine what it tasted like. That was such a strange day for me. Thank goodness for tissues with lotion - my poor nose would have been red and raw without this miraculous invention. I seem to have gotten away with the minimum of coughing and I wonder if my nightly nasal lavages helped. My sense of smell is still not quite 100% yet but then there are times when it feels like I can smell at 1000%. The other weird symptom that I had was that I started to tear up no matter what I was doing - talking, laughing, eating, sleeping. I would wake up with salt trails from the corners of my eyes. At any rate I tested negative 10 days after that 2nd test. I am very slowly going out again but am preferring to be outside if we are dining.

I will chat more about how the trip to Malaysia and Singapore goes. I can't wait but am also a little apprehensive. Wish me wonderful adventures.

    See you in September!
