Book & Paper Arts Calendar Updates - January 22, 2022

Hello everyone,

Thanks to Helen Hiebert for including this Book & Paper Arts calendar  experiment/project/adventure in her 100 Papery Picks for 2021! I am so delighted to be included among the many people I admire!

For someone who dabbles in folding origami mandalas and basic kusudama the first ever Geometric Origami Convention is like a dream come true (posted in calendar Jan 29 & 30)

My musings and meanderings are contemplations about fence posts, sunsets and butterflies are below.

Stay well, creative and curious!

Me ke aloha nui - Jade

Bits & bobs about paper/books/tips/trips/etc.

So I have a thing for paper and after paper I seem to have a thing for adhesives (I have all kinds!) - here is a video from Das Bookbinding talking about adhesives

Very cool and unusual books by Roberta Lavadour and Graham Patten (be sure to check out the video to see how the book works)

If you follow Byopia Press you may have noticed Cathryn posting about accordions/concertinas/leporellos (very much in sync yet separate from Playful Bookbinding and Paper Work - Paula Krieg) click here to get to the index Cathryn published for her accordion related blogs

To follow what Paula Krieg has been doing with her accordion sessions start with her Nov 26, 2021 blog and read through to the present - get the zoom link for the Accordion 101 sessions on the Nov 26 blog. They will be going on until Feb 5, 2022. Looking for videos no longer on the blog can be found on her youtube channel

I love interactive pages, cards, books, etc. - here is a kirigami magic spinning card

Remember how I love interactivity? Here are some interactive origami structures called fireworks to be folded with awe, patience and perseverance using (paper size listed in videos):  12 sheets; 24 Sheets; 30 sheets; 48 sheets; the whopper of them all 192 sheets;  and once you have folded all these or at least one of them you can try folding it from one sheet

One more bit on interactivity - I love flexagons (a British student at Princeton, Arthur Stone, had to rip his paper to fit the US binders and so began the "doodling") so here are A Few Flexagons from Byopia PressWant to fold an envelope because you don't have your envelope punch board with you? Diagonal leaf envelope; vertical leaf envelope; origami bar money envelope; plus 8 others (they fold a little fast here but that is why I love the pause buttons)Bainbridge Island Museum of Art’s (BIMA) - Artist's Books Unshelved:  Resilience and Restoration; full play list here

Northwoods Book Arts Guild is offering a compendium with NBG 2021 program activities focused on an exploration of foldable book structures, many based on simple accordion structures created by Hedi Kyle. For sale at Paper Birches in Fairbanks, AK,  ($25 with local pickup during Open Studio hours on Wednesdays) or by mail order ($33, email: margoklass@acsalaska.net). I can't wait to receive mine!If you have an iPhone here are some suggestions on how to speed it up without buying another one

How a book from the 1850s is professionally conserved - I was shocked when they put the pages in water and yet the pages held up. Paper is amazing!

Sometimes folding as a meditative exercise is not enough and I do some breathing exercises

8 new and exciting paper art and paper craft books

Upcoming calligraphy classes from John Neal Books website

I don't usually mention music in this section but I thought I would mention Yo Yo Ma answering questions about the cello (rather an under rated instrument but it moves me - a lot like in-person rocket launches and he seems approachable), Yo Yo playing the most famous cello piece - Bach: Cello Suite No. 1 in G Major (or that cello piece and everyone would know which one you were refering to) and this guy! recording and playing all 12 cello parts (goosebumps and tearing up from me) of Faure's Pavane is just unbelievable

About the calendar, how to look for upcoming workshops and on-demand workshops

Link to the calendar: https://teamup.com/ksd9e12a80c3878ba5 (If the link is not working copy and paste it to your browser)

  • The time listed as you mouse over or press each entry or at the top of the entry when opened will be in the time zone of the listing organization. If a virtual/online workshop the times for other time zones will also be listed in the Description area along with a time zone converter

  • There is no difference between In-person1 (blue entries) and In-person2 (red entries) or Online1 (orange entries), Online2 (light teal entries) and Online3 (purple entries), just a way to visually separate workshops; light purple entries are for festivals or conferences; yellow are public online meetings from various book arts guilds and museums; anything with ** are newly found workshops and events since the last newsletter was sent out

  • To change views in the calendar: on laptop/PC/tablet locate the 3 bar or hamburger button [≡] upper right corner and select .. Day .. Week .. Month .. Agenda, List - on cellphone locate 3 bar button and select the down arrow button to the left of it and make your selection as above

  •  To move backwards or forwards in time in the calendar: on laptop/PC/tablet locate "Today" in the upper left corner and click on the single left facing arrow to back one time period (based on what view you have selected) and single right facing arrow to move one time period forward - on cellphone locate the ">>" button and to the right of that will be the single left & right facing arrow

  • Look for magnifying glass on your screen to do a Search by state, town, instructor name, time zone, keyword, etc. If one class is sold out search for a keyword from that class to see if another is available, for example, "masu" or "Sheehy". Do use the organization's workshop calendar listed in each calendar entry to see other disciplines/mediums being offered

  • The calendar is updated as I come across information and you have 24x7 access to it

  • You can add any calendar entry to your own personal calendar to help you keep track of meetings and workshops you will be attending. On interested entry either right click or touch & hold down your finger on the selected entry for a couple of seconds, select Share then select which calendar (Google, iCal, Outlook) you wish to add to. Musings and Meanderings

From giant waves to Monarch butterflies to curvy roads the driving trip we took in the last 2 weeks has been a blast!Lots of red tail hawks, looking healthy and fluffed up from the cold. An especially inordinate number perched on light standards or fence posts allowing me closer admiring looks. Conversely the side of the highway is dotted with dead ones recognizable only by their longer wing feathers or striped tail ones.  The heavy rains over the holidays had carved out gullies in the farm lands we are passing (their own temporary version of the California aqueduct) and the hills by the side of the road sometimes looked like the Napali Coast on Kauai. Highlight - seeing a turkey vulture sun himself with wings outstretched on a fence post. Contrary to popular belief I thought he was rather beautiful!Watching horses graze bring me tranquility. And Highland cattle just north of Elk, CA, made me smile. Even more adorable was a young calf scratching its head on a fence post. But the best unexpected pleasure of the day was meeting Buck - a gorgeous German shepherd - keeping his human company at the Art Collective in Elk. Always a lovely stop to support and take in art and inspiration. Checking out the little free library just steps away was also a bonus! The drive between Point Arena and Mendocino was filled with curves, animals, rivers, lush greeness and waves whose heights when they broke made me gasp when I was lucky enough to catch them. If there weren't any sea stacks or rocks in the way we got to see waves with gorgeous rooster tails as the offshore winds were brisk. I have way too many videos of these waves - I just love them! The most beautiful sunset ever was on our drive from Anchor Bay back to Mendocino. We have experienced the sunset green flash a couple of times in our travels but those somehow managed to pale in comparison to that sunset where all colors of the rainbow and just about everything else in between were out in full force. We tried to take pictures but they just did not do it justice. All we could do was watch and admire. Every time we went around yet another bend trees would be silhouetted by the gorgeous colors. Finally we were at a place where sea met sky and merging and reflection and physics happened and all we could do was look and wish all the people we loved could have also been there.Speaking of Monarch butterflies we visited 3 places in an attempt to be able to see them - Natural Bridges Monarch Trail in Santa Cruz, CA (only spotted 2 clusters looking like huge brown grey pinecones, none flying around as sunlight had not yet warmed them up and 2 horned owls), Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary in Pacific Grove, CA (there were about 9K -14K butterflies there and as it was later in the day and more were flying about) and Goleta Monarch Butterfly Grove (again only 2 clusters). It was a little shocking to see how few butterflie there were. I remember the first time I took Bill to the Goleta Grove in our first year together. Every single eucalyptus branch was covered and as the sun penetrated the grove the butterflies started to fly and mingle. There were so many that when I asked Bill to close his eyes he could hear something almost but not quite like a leaf rustling. If you have not been in the middle of millions Monarch butterflies waking up for for the day please enjoy this short video.====================Resource List
