Musings and Meanderings
Last I left off we were on our way to Texas to spend the holidays with my brother and his partner. We flew into Austin and missed the gate of Interimaginary Departures as we turned left to get to baggage claim instead of right. Gate ∞ is an interactive art installation at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) located between Gates 12 and 14. Next time!
Austin was filled with Texas BBQ (KG BBQ - run by an Egyptian native known as the Egyptian Cowboy - a yummy and different take on sides and desserts), boba milk teas, country fried steaks (really just a vehicle for gravy), lots of walks around lakes and botanical gardens (even saw a young red tail hawk perched in an oak tree at the gardens and watching us like, well, a hawk), stopping to smell the roses, looking for a building that looked like an abstract owl when viewed from a certain perspective. We continued our quest for the best country fried steak and boba milk teas getting into San Antonio where we met the latest addition to Bill's family, a teeny, tiny 5-week old whose entire head could fit into the cupped palm of my hand. It was quite the adventure walking along Riverwalk as I was astounded to see people walking around with open containers and weird yard long container of alcolholic drinks. This area is exempt from the city's open-container ordinance and was also quite crowded despite how close it was to Christmas.
We drove to Houston the next day taking advantage of the very clean bathrooms at Buc-ees (chain of massive travel centers founded in Texas in 1982, renowned for exceptionally clean restrooms, hundreds! of fueling positions, and a cult-like following). It is a destination in and of itself. Also just before getting to Buc-ees, I noticed turkey buzzards fighting for space on a light standard on a overpass. The funny thing is there was another perfectly good light standard across the way that may have had a better vantage point of the freeway. After checking into our hotel, I sent off some earrings to be reworked by my favorite earring designer. Sadly I hadn't worn them in a while - the stones were still lovely & sparkly - I had asked her if a refresh could be possible. When she said yes I made sure to get them to her as soon as possible. I will be picking up my "new" earrings from her in Singapore at the end of February, sitting down to a meal with her family and catching up!
We contemplated Rothko's art work at the Rothko Chapel in silence and in the moment. It was dark in the gallery yet not at all somber. A small skylight let in changing amounts of light as the sun went through its shy and not so shy moods. What intrigued me about the whole thing was that we all saw different things in the same panels and some panels evaded being seen as if they were not ready for a conversation with us. Or maybe I was not ready for what they might reveal. I would love to see them again - curious to find out if my view point will have changed or remained the same.
Christmas was a relatively quiet affair spent with SIL's family and a slightly yippy doglet who decided to situate herself and play with her new squeaky Christmas toy next to me. It did not matter how many times I threw that toy - she kept coming back! Sigh! Good food was had between football games and suggestions to the family that maybe next Christmas should be enjoyed in Hawai'i. Yes, I am most wicked! Amazingly there was a boba milk tea cafe open that night and enjoyed yet another delicious boba milk tea.
The day after was spent in tech support and here I thought my days in tech support were over after retiring. My brother had gotten a new phone for his birthday but had yet to transfer the data from his old phone to the new one. Between my SIL and myself we convinced him to get it done and they spent about an hour there. Yet technically nothing got done despite her having "downloaded" some apps! We looked for a transfer cable after breakfast (more country fried steak!) and then back to the house to see if I could do anything. Everyone hovered over both shoulders and I had to ask for non-hovering space as I started to troubleshoot! Figured out that I could move his data over in smaller chunks along with all his customizations. By the time I was done 3 hours later his new phone looked like his old one but bigger, brighter, faster with more bells and whistles! Nothing like binge watching a K-drama while waiting for data chunk transfers to finish. They asked what I charged and I said that dinner would take care of that tech support session.
The next day I introduced my brother and SIL to weird and crazy places in Houston that they did not know about. I am huge proponent of being a tourist where you live. We took in the Beer Can House and I bought a baseball cap that read, "He believed that beer cured everything!" I could not resist! Then we made our way to Smither Park - an amazing park filled with mosaics made from everything. It made me glad that these one time precious items had a second life as a work of art. It had a throne, amphitheater, swings, picnic tables, mosaic filled walkways, walls filled to overflowing with delicate tea cups and broken drill bits and everything in between. My eyes were having a tough figuring out what some of the sculptures were supposed to represent but they resolved themselves as I viewed them through my camera. It was truly mesmerizing, layered & whimsical. I would go back again. I bet I would find new sculptures I missed before.

We flew back to California from the smaller and less busy airport, William P. Hobby (HOU) instead of George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH). I wondered where all the people were. It was such a marked difference from when we flew back from IAH in 2025. There was also a small exhibit put on by the Contemporary Handweavers of Houston complete with loom, fabrics and buisness cards - they offer classes, btw. Baggage claim when we landed in Long Beach was a little backed up as about 4 flights landed at the same time. Other than that it was a relative stress free flight. My takeaway from this is if you have to travel for the holidays use the less busy airports, if at all possible. I am lucky enough to have 3 alternate airports within 12 - 35 miles away with Los Angeles International being 16 miles away.
Other highlights - continued to plan for our trip to SE Asia, loads of one way flights and traversing through airlines I had never used before and lodging for places we had never been to before. Happy to announce I got done on January 8th along with a document (shared with my brother as there will be overlapping travel) that had dates with destinations, flights, lodging and when to apply for visas and/or travel cards. Bill even wanted to know how long it took me to put all of that together.
Also heard the sonic boom as the SpaceX Crew-11 mission Dragon capsule entered the atmosphere while working on the newsletter around 12:38 AM on January 15. Yet another heard but not seen space tech adventure. The last time this happened was when we attended a SpaceX launch in their early days, so early that interns would take the day off from JPL to drive from La Cañada Flintridge to Vandenberg Space Force Base (about a 3-hour drive), watch the launch and re-entry, and then drive back. Only thing is it was so foggy that morning that all we saw was fog moving around but we did hear everything - launch, first stage re-entry sonic boom and landing.
Also enjoying attending Realm of Solids for the 2nd time with Paula Krieg. The last time I took this class was in late 2022. I always learn something new with Paula, always loads of fun to learn from Paula and always worth the price of admission. Looking forward to the Secret Lives of Cubes with Paula in February which will be done just before we leave for our SE Asia trip.
You can drive the entire length of Highway 1 again after a closure of almost 3 years. I would suggest that you drive it from Daly City (south of San Francisco) down to San Luis Obispo (north west of Los Angeles) for the best views. Stop at every turn out and little town and restaurant along the way. Hoping to take a quick trip to Cambria to explore the newly re-opened highway and take a few small hikes and thoroughly enjoy the views. Might even be crazy enough to head up to Carmel-by-the-Sea (only 2.5 hours north from Cambria) to check out some sights we missed the last time.
Here's to second chances and more adventures. See you in February!
