Book & Paper Arts Calendar Updates - January 20, 2021

Hello everybody,

I am spoiled when it comes to the weather living in Southern CA but I miss snuggling under my favorite quilt. It just hasn't gotten cold enough to pull it out of storage from under the bed. Then again I am grateful that it is not 10°F like it was in Colorado (thinking about you, Helen) at the beginning of the year. I am still getting my nourishment by looking out the window whether it is out the bedroom or car window. I was lucky enough to see the ISS go overhead 3 nights in a row and had to get out of the house to hear (and smell) the ocean and check out the high surf that hit the beaches last week. Only 7 - 10 foot waves unlike in Hilo, HI where they had 15 - 20 footers. It is bad when they have to close Hwy 19 between the bay and downtown Hilo. Your detour comes in/out by the "singing" bridge!

We are meeting more and more on Zoom so please see below in the Bits and Bobs section about the latest and greatest in Zoom. Add a profile picture for when you turn off video, change your name (and include your current location since we are participating in more meetings not just in our local area), make it look like you have lipstick on, etc.

If you are interested in a workshop, please go to the calendar entry to check for registration closing dates. I am noticing that more instructors are sending out materials for their workshops to replicate the in-person immersive experience.

Hope you are staying safe, well and creative!

Me ke aloha nui- Jade

About the calendar

Link to the calendar: https://teamup.com/ksd9e12a80c3878ba5 (If the link is not working copy and paste it to your browser)

  • The time listed as you mouse over each entry or at the top of the entry when opened will be Pacific Time with the roiginal & other times listed in the Description area

  • There is no difference between Calendar 1 (blue entries) and 2 (red entries), just a way to visually separate in-person workshops; orange and light teal (also visual separation) entries are online workshops; light green ones are the latest workshops found since the last email update; purple entries are for festivals or conferences;  yellow are public online meetings from various book arts guilds and museums

  • You can do a search (magnifying glass search button in upper right of screen) by state, town, instructor name, time zone, etc. If it is the calendar you can search on it. If one class is sold out search for a keyword to see if another is available, for example, "masu" or "Sheehy". Do use the organizations workshop calendar to see what else is being offered

  • Monthly view is best viewed using a larger monitor with desktop/laptop. To change view look for Scheduler, Day, ... Month ... Agenda, List in upper right corner of screen and click on appropriate view

  • If using cell, mobile or smart phone change view to List, Day or Agenda view using button with the down arrow in upper right corner of screen

  • Agenda (list view from current day going forward) or List (list view for current week/month going forward)

Bits & bobs about paper/books/tips/trips/etc.

Since we are on Zoom so much here are top 20 tips & tricks and new features

Have you ever needed to prop your card open to take pictures, to display, etc? Here is a nifty way to help keep it open - many things you purchase come encased in a plastic - use that and this video to make a clear stand

Paper tessellations by Ekaterina Lukasheva

If you have a tough time lining up your folds when doing origami, Margo Klass from Northwoods Book Arts Guild suggested  creating a "bumper" with a ruler (a long quilting ruler is wonderful). You can tape the ends down to your cutting mat or folding surface with removable tape and use the straight edge to line up your folds. Just make sure that your paper does not slide under the ruler. Handy when you do not have a bench hook or LEGO square jig!

Margo also taught a delightful Book Arts Basics series (#1) focusing on creative foldable structures for connected picture frames. The session was not recorded but she did provide a link for a video so you can make your own as well. Alternate video for folding the base for the picture frame (from 0:30 - 3:20). To enjoy future workshops and demos sign up for their newsletter (scroll to bottom of page)

The puzzle purse is a pretty cool structure and I had not run into it before last weekend. Instructions from Alice Simpson here as well

Try your hand at this handy dandy self closing box, sometimes also called a box in a box (instructions with pictures and youtube video - in German with English subtitles)

Learn how to make a squash book with Kit Davey

This elaborately armored samurai was folded from a single sheet of paper (video of his process included)

Origami is beneficial - it relaxes you, encourages a mind-body connection and you get to make things. Just like everything else it requires practice and patience and no beating yourself up when your elephant does not look like an elephant

Home made toys made out of paper, cardboard and skewers - what a creative Dad! I would love to have these toys even now.

Podcast - Visual Arts Thrived In A Tumultuous 2020

The Guild of BookWorkers has digitized handouts from their seminars from 1989 through 2005 and is offering them as free PDF's. The topics are very varied - including eco-printing, making paste papers as well as fine binding techniques.

If you love Beatrice Coron, Bhavna Mehta and all the other talented & amazing papercutting artists out there you will love Cybèle Young

I would buy eggs more often if they came packaged like this! I would consider a wall installation made out of the ones from © Spencer Hill

If you miss virtually browsing library shelves the website Internet Archive is working to bring the thrill of browsing library shelves to the safety of your own home

John Neal Books has been posting online workshops for calligraphy. If you have questions about any of these online classes, please contact the instructor

The California Science Center has virtual field trips for teachers with students K - 5. Click on this link to sign up for future notifications and available time slots

Resources

  • A list of organizations from where I gather my information - Word document or PDF document - is maintained in my Dropbox account. This list is always being updated as I find or am told about new organizations and instructors

  • Centralized area for hundreds of opportunities for artists - mostly residencies, some grant funding & galleries compiled by one person to encourage community. International, but with a US-lens. Assembled and maintained by Everest Pipkin - from US so it leans that way. You can also help by sending opportunities to add - see how to in spreadsheet.

  • Residencies in many different mediums. See if one of these fit you.

  • Online juried shows - https://www.onlinejuriedshows.com/preDefault.aspx
