Have to include an origami mandala by Sandra Gobert and another mandala by Falk Brito

I was made aware of this unusually bound book just recently (thank you, Marie C.) - a 16th-century book that contains no fewer than six different books in a single binding - be sure to also check out the still pictures to get a closer look - love the fore edge decoration

Talking about another unusual binding Byopia Press blogged about a model reversible box with attached accordion book

How about a popup house of cards and another version to play with

You know how I love words (and collect them) and here are 7 body parts you didn’t know had a name and don’t scrunch your glabella thinking about it

Here is a data technologist who is helping us visualize population density data - rather weirdly beautiful

Layla May Arthur narrative architectural paper sculptures - the boulangerie resonated with me - very reminiscent of the shophouses where I grew up

Reminiscent of “This Book is a Planetarium”, “XIU – This Book Can Be Weaving” is another interactive book I would not mind having in my collection

I try looking for Little Free Libraries when I travel but I would not mind visiting these 9 unusual libraries as well

I am not the greatest at making boxes but I bet I could get better checking out Byopia Press’ use of their new corner clamps and instructions

If you are like me I save boxes just in case but Ann Weber elevates cardboard boxes to another level

Making art can be meditative but I love watching Mark Stebbins (his art art would make for amazing chilewich placemats) on IG

Peter Baumgartner filmed a video tutorial on gothic binding

Peter and Donna Thomas made another accordion book out of an accordion and here are their artists’ books made out of other musical instruments. Found the video for the other accordion accordion book

If you are a fan of Felicia Rice here is a video of her new studio, Moving Parts Press, in Mendocino, CA (a favorite small towns)

A centuries-old decorative tradition inspires Michelle Robinson’s vibrant weavings

So I don’t feel so guilty about my cache of unread books (something else I collect) - the Japanese call this practice tsundoku and it may provide lasting benefits

Something else I collect - washi tape - and more ways on how to use it - the techniques I see translating to book making and paper exploring

Another way to use your lovely paper in a different way and even though this is about quilting disappearing quilt blocks it does translate

I am only out after dark for special occasions with good friends and cool astronomy happenings. We will be lucky enough to have 4 supermoons this year. Luckily the closest one on Aug 31 won’t interfere with the biggest meteor shower, the Perseids, with the peak happens around Aug 12 - 13 when that moon will be 10% full - trip to the desert, anyone?

Musings and Meanderings

A memory was triggered as I watched a YouTube video (that, weirdly enough, had nothing to do with the video). I had mentioned in a previous newsletter that I should have been a cataloger but I remember being a cataloger, of sorts, many moons ago. My mother was a teacher until we left Malaysia for the US. My school for 1st and 2nd grade, Batu Road Girls School, was across the street from where she taught, Batu Road Boys School (my brothers went there but that is another story). I wonder if she knew that I looked for her as she taught when I was outside for recess? But then I also thought that she could catch me being naughty just by looking across the street. Needless to say I was on my best behavior, most of the the time.

She had the project of organizing the new library and so I was introduced to the Dewey Decimal system. We would hang out in the library together on weekends or after school as I typed the many labels and learned to align them so the numbers would be centered. The labels were placed just so - 1.5” (3.8cm) or so from the bottom of the spine - it made for a pleasant line as you walked down the many aisles. There probably weren’t that many but I was very impressionable as a kid. And even though I was only 7 or 8 at the time we would confer about how a book should be cataloged if it wasn’t immediately obvious. I’m pretty sure she knew how it should have been cataloged but I suspect she was encouraging my critical thinking. I treasure that now resurrected memory. My father read me bedtime stories & took me on adventures but it was my mother who gave me my love of research and origami. Mom was instrumental in teaching me my first origami structures even before I started any kind of school. She had to keep me busy since I did not attend kindergarten - something about my brothers having too many bad experiences while there - I believe I turned ok anyway - LOL! Thank you, Mom!
