Musings and Meanderings

I thoroughly enjoyed Helen Hiebert's virtual book launch for The Art of Papercraft. Over 200 people from all over the world attended including all the greats from the paper and book world. Some people had their book arrive during the meeting! I was tickled to see Hedi Kyle there as well (hmm ... do you think we could convince her to teach online?). If you'd like to read about what people loved about paper in the zoom chat at the beginning of the launch Byopia Press has a partial list (mine was "You hold my folds!"). I may put up a complete list later (I would need to remove the names on the saved chat).Which one was your favorite? By the way my name is in the book. Email me with the "page number and what I contributed" and I will send you half a pound of paper from Shizen Paper.I have been seeing a spate of scamming happening even on my phone from texts (latest one seems to be pickup your grant money) and phishing in emails from sites that look like Amazon or Paypal but are not. If you are not sure about any correspondence, email or text, you receive always go to the website directly to check if there was an issue. If at all possible do not ever click on a link in the correspondence unless this is something you did because you enable 2FA or 2 Factor Authentication. Do not call the number they tell you to call. Go directly to that organization's website to get a phone number. If the error message appears to fill up the entire screen (looking like your laptop has crashed) try pressing the [esc] key. Mouse over the links to see if they go to the correct website as opposed to an unrecognizable web address. Block texts/numbers or send emails to the spam folder. You can always undo these actions. Be vigilant! Let me know if you have any questions about apps to put in place to help keep you safe on your computer.
The month since the last newsletter has been one of reconnecting - seeing people I hadn't seen in decades or months. Everyone has been so very understanding about the lack of communication and it was as if we were never apart. We couldn't get our words out fast enough! You could probably hear us laughing from across the street! Bill has had to close the door to the bedroom a number of times once the laughter on the zoom session started. It has also been a month of where I gave myself permission to have some fun and attend a number of virtual classes instead of worrying about ... well ... everything. Not sure if it was the reconnections or the great teachers I have had in virtual classes lately (probably both)  but I have been enjoying this last month immensely. I don't usually continue making things/structures/books after the class is done but things feel different this time. I have been absorbing and breathing all things paper as evidenced by models made from all kinds of paper (from baking parchment to rock paper) on every inch of horizontal space. Thanks to all the teachers and paper loving tribe (i.e. my fellow workshop attendees) that have contributed their energy to this renaissance!See you next month!

Resource List

  • A list of organizations from where I gather my information - Word document or PDF document - is maintained in my Dropbox account (you do not need to create an account to access this information)

  • A list of my favorite paper places, both online and brick & mortar locations - Word or PDF - ditto in my Dropbox (I am not affiliated, associated, authorized, endorsed by, or in any way officially connected with any of the companies listed. I merely enjoy their products and fantasize about what I can buy)

  • A list of on-demand workshops with pre-recorded videos and/or kits but no release dates - Word or PDF - also in Dropbox

  • Centralized area for hundreds of opportunities for artists - mostly residencies, some grant funding & galleries compiled by one person to encourage community. International, but with a US-lens. Assembled and maintained by Everest Pipkin - from US so it leans that way. You can also help by sending opportunities to add - see how to in spreadsheet.

  • Online juried shows - https://www.onlinejuriedshows.com/preDefault.aspx

  • Current art calls for entry list - all over US: https://www.entrythingy.com/forartists_calls (you will need to create an account to access the information)
