Hello everyone,

For the full newsletter experience, read this email online to get the latest information: archives and calendar. Time sensitive information may be added to the newsletter after it has been sent out. Feel free to let me know about broken links or links pointing to the wrong place. I hope that you can use this newsletter as a jumping off point for your own explorations and adventures looking for workshops, teachers and organizations, processes, etc.

  • One of my very first teachers, Gina Pisello, when I started out on my book arts journey will be teaching Piano Hinge Book and Screen at BARN (Bainbridge Island, WA) - woo hoo!
  • If you are in the San Diego area and would like to have a well loved Ingento guillotine paper cutter that is 25.5" (top to bottom including the cutter handle), it is yours for you to pick up - text 619-368-1001 with "Subject: board cutter" and to check if it is still available
  • As Karen Hanmer approaches thirty years in the book arts she is making her workshop handouts available for free download - thank you, Karen, for this very generous offer!
  • Registration for Newport Paper and Book Arts Festival (NPBAF) opens Feb 25, 2026 and for Focus on Book Arts (FOBA) on Mar 28, 2026
  • This newsletter will be taking a break in March 2026 as I will be traveling - the last newsletter before my trip starts will be this one, the next one will be in late April 2026 - feel free to look at the archived copies of the newsletter from years past

Came across this as I was researching my trip - on returning to the US from an international trip there is no need to stand in line at immigration even if you haven't signed up for any of the other trusted traveler programs - sign up for Mobile Passport Control (MPC) instead and it is free

I use Google Keep to organize items I find for the newsletter and trips - I have used just about all the features - the grab text from photo is really handy if I don't wish to type out the info from a picture within Instagram or an email - the labels are also very handy (I have the same labels in Keep as I do in the newsletter) so updates or additions are much easier

Musings and Meanderings

I may have figured out why de-cluttering can sometimes be overwhelming, at least for me. I finally got around to putting away my opened mail (very neatly put away in a plain manila folder, mind you) and realized that perhaps my reluctance in putting things away may have been due to the final destination of said open mail might be in a place where it might have been a tad difficult to get into. Imagine a small walk-in closet where some things have gone to that dimension where Schroedinger's cat would be most happy, where there is an overflowing bag of mat board (anybody need mat board, let me know - I got mine from a framing store ages ago), 2 different sized exercise balls and exercise mats providing a veritable minefield of tripping opportunities.

Then in the bookcase cubicle where the binder holding said mail resides also had a bag filled with cables from tech so old that I had a good chuckle every time I inspected each one for re-use. Only one cable was still useful - so that's where that HDMI (video) cable went to. As I de-clutter I am using an over the door mesh shoe holder to contain still useful items attempting to put like items with like items and maybe even labeling them. Color coded post-it notes and mini binder clips here I come! Ask me me if I have done that yet and the answer would be an emphatic, "No!" Then I thought, "Hmm! Maybe I need to move that binder to another area in that closet, perhaps closer to the door, for better accessibility", but that area had a cat's head basket holding more stuff I hadn't put away (seeing a pattern here). So I worked on that basket to make room for my binder. Now there was more stuff that needed to be put away but I won't mention it here (can you feel my pain?). And so a couple of hours later, I was finally able to put away my opened mail in a place where it is easier to get to as long as I don't stack anything in the way. Should I take bets with myself on how long that lovely clear space will last?

Tried a new place for coffee as I search for a place that is as close to the coffee I get from the Big Island (BI) when we are there. Unfortunately the place on BI does not ship - sigh! Whilst waiting for my turn to order (and was surprised to discover they did not take online orders), I noticed a line on the other side of the plaza where people were walking away with boxes and wondering what were in those boxes. Overhearing some people led me to realize that it was a popup bakery. "Hmm! Another new place to discover?", I wondered. I also picked up a bag of whole beans to feed my coffee machine while still in line to place my order. Bean origins were a mix from Brazil, Kenya and Sumatra with flavors of dark chocolate, blackberry and brown sugar - sold! I ordered a flat white finished with splash of cream. While the flat white was disappointingly flat, the popup bakery was quite the opposite - a bakery with Egyptian flavors and French flair. I always purchase two (2) standards to compare - a butter croissant and a chocolate croissant and at least one (1) something new. I got a kouign amman with cardamom cream dolloped in the middle (something old and something new) and a merguez sausage croissant (something new). The croissant was ok something was missing, maybe needed more proofing? The chocolate croissant was better almost on par with my favorite one that is available at a bakery an hour's drive away (so quite the treat!). The kouign was weirdly flat in height, maybe a little too shatteringly crisp (is that even possible?), lacking a more tender middle but I loved the dollop of cardamom cream in the middle. It more than made up that they did not have a cardamom bun. Now that merguez sausage croissant was a lovely combination of wonderful layers and beautifully spiced (but not spicy) lamb. I believe my eyes may have rolled back in my head. I had to go back again the next day to get another one. Have not had such a croissant before. Glad I decided to take a chance. Had my own flat white at home the next day with the beans I had purchased and it seemed to be extra yummy compared to the one I had the previous day.

There was a silk lantern exhibit at the Korean Cultural Center that I thought would make for a colorful adventure. Quick video on Instagram here. Parking is free but you will need to be buzzed in - pull up to the parking lot gate in the back and push the button on the left to be let in - or park on the street and pay at the meter. I was able to combine that with a pickup for Chinese New Year snacks - just a few things as I knew I'd be able to get some more of once we were in Singapore and Malaysia. I also had to resist going to a bookstore in K-town (in Los Angeles) in order to get more origami paper. I was able to pick up a couple more packs of Chinese New Year lucky red money envelopes so I guess I was able to satisfy my paper craving. All that red and gold looks so sumptuous. It reminded me of the times I celebrated Chinese New Year (birthdays and any other special occassion) growing up in Malaysia. I knew there would be money in those envelopes, anywhere from MYR1 to MYR5, more from parents, aunts & uncles, grandparents! I felt so flush with money after the celebrations concluded. Happy New Year, btw, and welcome to the Year of the Fire Horse.

After concluding my adventures with the Realm of Solids (RoS) workshop, I also attended an in-person class with Judith Christensen on popups and flexagons. I learned a great way to put together a flexagon in the correct order so that any pre-printed text on the paper would show up in the correct order. I also learned that you could also experiment with different shapes for the pages and playing with negative and positive spaces. It was quite magical and worth the drive down to San Diego and back up within 12 hours. Got a few more subscribers in the process many of whom are starting out in the book and paper arts world! The Athenaeum newsletter came in handy when decorating the flexagons. I also started another workshop with Paula Krieg, The Secret Lives of Cubes, which will conclude when I am on my trip (I am still trying to figure out the logistics and what to pack - got some amazing suggestions from the other workshop attendees - thank you, Jean - for the removable glue dots idea thus being able to keep my 3D structures flat). All I can say is if you see both of these classes in the future, run don't walk, even if you've taken them before, to sign up. I had taken RoS before but the amazing Paula keeps it fresh and exciting in both classes with new things she has discovered, played and experimented with. Lots of cool structures followed by squeals of delight and appropriately mind blown!

Keeping this musing short even though I had a few snippets about confused cherry blossom & jacarandas, figuring out switchbots (to turn things on and off while we are away) and sunset walks - taking care of the little logistics bits left for the trip.

See you in April!
