Book & Paper Arts Calendar Updates - February 19, 2018
Hello, everybody - Looks like another huge update coming your way and some news about the book and paper arts world.
=================================================== ReOpening the Book, an exhibit of artist’s books, will be at the Elverhoj Museum in Solvang, California, from February 3 to April 29, 2018. You could attend the Cayucos Sea Glass Festival on Mar 10 - 11, and go to this exhibit as well as take a workshop (call 805-686-1211 to register)! Maybe I will see you there!
=================================================== Would you like to teach at FOBA? The Focus on Book Arts (FOBA) conference is looking for instructors for the fourteenth biennial Conference. Conference dates are Wednesday through Sunday June 26-30. Details and an application form here.
Have you signed up for the Newport Paper & Book Arts Festival? Call 541-265-6569 to check for workshops that are still open. List of workshops and registration form in my dropbox.
=================================================== If you are in the Minnesota state May 11 - 13, 2018, and are looking to add to your ceramics/pottery collection you may be interested in checking out the St. Croix Valley Pottery Tour. More information.
=================================================== GBW Tacoma 2017. Book #1 - Laura Russell No 1 in a new series of ‘Thank You Books’, celebrating the first 10 years of 23 Sandy. A goal of a book a month, all free, open-edition books, perhaps one-sheet wonders, perhaps not. But, all aimed at thanking the oh so many artists, librarians, visitors and supporters of the gallery. The photos in the book are vintage “Roadside Americana” in Tacoma. The book is a four-sided, one-sheet carousel book adapted from Ed Hutchins’ Book Dynamics.
More details & you can download a free PDF of the Tacoma book here.
=================================================== Asheville Bookworks will formally close its doors as a creative business entity at the end of March 2019. Look for workshops searching for “Asheville” in the calendar. Here are some more workshops.
=================================================== How about a residency in Greece on the island Skopelos? The Skopelos Foundation for the Arts, an American owned and operated artist studio located on the Greek Island of Skopelos is offering residencies for 2018. The studio is equipped for painters, printmakers, clay artists, digital photographers, and videographers. The length of residence is from 2-4 weeks from March-October. Residency details
=================================================== If you are up early enough on Wednesday, Feb 21 you should be able to watch a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket launch from Vandenberg AFB at 6:17am PST. If you are on the coast, at a high vantage point and you can look north (use a compass app to point you towards 289°) you should be able to see the launch!
Did you know you can watch the International Space Station pass overhead? Just off the top of my head: their day is about 90 minutes long, they are going at over 17,000 mph at 240 miles above the surface of Earth, and is the 4th brightest thing (sun, moon, Venus) you can see in the early morning and night sky. Sign up for alerts here.
=================================================== Travel tip: Have you gone on vacation or had to rent a car and needed to fill it up? Which side is the gas door? Do you get out to look for it? Adjust your side mirrors to see if you can see it? No more! Look for the gas tank icon on your dashboard. There will be an arrow either to the left or right of it letting you know the correct side. Woo hoo!
=================================================== Here are some upcoming classes on the calendar in the LA area, San Francisco (SF), along the west coast, some states just to the east (it could be a day-long adventure, make a weekend or whole vacation out of it!) and online in the next 30 - 60 days
