Book & Paper Arts Calendar Updates - Mar 26, 2023

Hello everyone,

  • As part of Bainbridge Island Museum of Art's (BIMA) 10th aniversary celebration the museum will be awarding the BRAVA awards in 4 (four) different categories - deadline: May 1, 2023

  • Would you like to participate in a community paper weaving project with Helen Hiebert?

  • Excited about Gina Pisello's Hide and Bind class - see April 22, 2023 - please see calendar (link in signature block)

  • I have always wanted to take a class with Bonnie Stahlecker as I have enjoyed her art over the years but the timing and place has eluded me yet again for her classes at InterOcean (Denver, CO) June 9 - 11, 2023 - please see calendar (link in signature block)

  • Big River Bindery has moved from Atlanta, GA, USA, to Toronto (technicaly Scarborough), Ontario, Canada, and after loads of unpacking is ready with in-person and virtual classes - woo hoo!

  • I am always adding classes and workshops to the calendar so if you have already looked at a particular day you may wish to check that day again. I encourage you to use the calendar and newsletter as jumping off points to do your own traversing down internet rabbit holes (or as I have been told, "Well - there goes my weekend!")

John Neal Books - upcoming online calligraphy classes

I inadvertently signed up for the Canadian Bookbinders and Book Artists Guild (CBBAG) when I registered for Cathryn Miller's (Byopia Press) talk on the role of a blog in her life and work but found a wealth of resources for in-person, on demand and online workshops

Tip: Unable to add or edit anything in your classroom/workshop Google suite? Do you already have an existing gmail email address? Signed up for your class with another email address? Have your teacher/instructor add your gmail email address to the slides or docs when they share access. For example, I normally sign up for classes with jsqcentral-workshop@yahoo.com but was unable to add any pictures or text until my gmail account - jadesquek@gmail.com - was addded for access to the slides.

Gina Pisello talk, Playing with Paper & Reimagining the Book, with BAG (Seattle) with a demo on how to make a half crane

I rarely go to the mall but when I do I will be looking out for these display windows

Continuing with folding paper stars/mandalas - fold these out of kite paper (glassine) or anything else translucent: Dahlia; TRNY designed by Tamaki @aosoraorigami from Japan; Pinwheel; Simple but beautiful star; Waldorf window star variation

Origami card holder and here is a variation to this - they call it a photo memo holder and has two tuck pockets. I believe Hedi Kyle has another multiple variation in her book, Art of the Fold

These paper ships atop paper wigs - delightful!

Even the intrusive sounds of a car alarm can be used as tempo/background for music!

I always knew that I danced to the beat of the drums and it is so much more than just keeping tempo. All these drumming levels telling the story and creating the mood - just wow!

Enjoy and be inspired by this interpretation of What is a book? - this book arts exhibit has passed but luckily is still available on line

Building life-sized paper effigies as offerings to the afterlife for Malaysia’s ghosts

This was in the beginning of the newsletter but will add it again here - participate in a community paper weaving project with Helen Hiebert

Sometimes I buy books just because they are beautiful but in this case I also love Matthew Shlian’s art and hope to explore the pieces in the book - Unfolding and a storefront art installation some time ago

This artist makes hand puppets that move so realistically that I forget the puppeteer is there - delightful!

Origami hexagon flower by Shuzo Fujimoto and a variation

Why do I like tatos so much? Probably for the same reason I like things with drawers and pockets - here is a tato to fold; and another; and another slightly different one

If you don't have a guillotine or cutter that cuts book board then try this

Shoot your art in a professional way with what you have or you could get your own little photographic studio - I have the Foldio1 which I should use to shoot the pictures for my Chinese Thread Book class ...

I am pretty sure I have featured this before but this is most mesmerizing - a murmuration of starlings

Paper sculptures by Lyndi Sales that I would love to put on my walls

Another color change variation to a masu for your Chinese Thread Book. It does end up about ¼ of the original paper size. Check out the other 2 in the January newsletter

Ingenious product designs - don’t mind some of the comments

I love! the Hedge book by Lizzie Brewer - Photo meta data translated to html printed out and made to look like old computer punch cards but then bound to look like jacquard loom weaving cards - what?!?

I am, of course, late to the party finding out about Ron Resch - artist, computer scientist, and applied geometrist revered for his work involving folding paper, Origami Tessellations and 3D Polyhedrons in the 60's and 70's - documentary about him: Paper and Stick Film

  • Some of his work realized on YouTube: squares, dominos or triangles hooked corner to corner - square1; square2; domino; triangles

  • Other videos: triangle system - a short; Ron Resch tessellation - another short; Eric Gjerde water bomb tessellation but you see this in the above documentary

Musings and Meanderings

So I rather enjoyed telling you my stories going backwards in time. That way I get more time to remember what it was I forgot! The snow that fell on Southern California these last 2 months - unfortunately all I got was rain but I could see the generous powdered sugar dusting on the hills that do not normally get snow - brought back some vivid memories.

My last beachcombing conference happened 6 years ago in March when we traveled to Maryland and North Carolina. We were the last to arrive at the rented house in Maryland and as all of us sat around the fire chatting away it started to snow. I had to go outside and catch a few snowflakes. I marveled at their elegant simplicity and beautiful 6-spoke symmetry before they melted off my forearms to continue their journey on the hydrologic cycle. It then occurred to me that I did not have a coat on and I had best get back inside to the warmth of the fire and company.

We visited friends in Colorado for Chinese New Year so they could meet Bill. It was cold but I don't remember it being that cold. Perhaps it feels less cold the further back in time you go? One of our outings involved looking for elk while driving around Estes Park. We started out with clear weather and very few elk. This progressed to light snow as we got higher and saw more elk. When the snow really started to come down the elk were everywhere. Every time we looked at the herd and every shot we took ended up being a ... well ... we were looking at their behinds. The snow started coming down sideways and our friend, Alan, decided to strip off his shirt and take a quick jog in the snow.

I used to travel to support 2 sites in Colorado. It had snowed overnight with my car parked outside at the hotel. Not being very snow savvy I tried clearing the windshield with my bare hands and a sympathetic hotel employee loaned me a snow scrapper (?). At the first traffic light I hit the brakes and the entire drift of snow that was on top of the car came crashing forward onto the hood. I had the windshield wiper working furiously so I could see again before the lights changed. A great sigh of relief as both windshield view and lights changed. However a mile down the road I encountered sleet and it froze to the windshield. The windshield wipers were absolutely useless as they just spread the frozen stuff all over. Eeek! In my panic I accidentally pulled on the windshield wiper lever and fluid miraculously shot at the windshield and the sweeping wipers cleared the frozen mess. Phew!

On another visit to Colorado my mind was swirling with thoughts while getting ready for bed. I thought a drive would help. I kept driving uphill and when I thought that was the highest I could go I pulled over and got out. I could see my breath as I opened the door. The snow creaked as I placed my left foot carefully before fully getting out of the car. The crisp air hurt as I took an unwilling breath when my face hit the cold air. The night was so still I felt like I could hear everything and the moon brought the birch trees I had parked under into stark relief. Every branch creaking under the weight of the snow made me look up thinking I was going to be doused in snow. Every crunchy footstep leaving an obvious hollow in the ground was my trail marker back to the car. I looked up at the extra bright stars until I could no longer stand the cold. Did the drive clear out the thoughts in my head? I don't remember what caused the swirly thoughts in my head but I certainly remember my time up on that mountain.

I did not see snow until I was 19. There was very little chance of that while living in a tropical country. The closest thing to snow was the frost I scrapped off the freezer with my cupped hand. I was invited on a ski trip and even though I did not ski I went along. We were at a pit stop when I saw my first snowflake and I was agog! I had seen pictures but this was other worldly! Then I taught myself how to ski on the bunny slopes after some perfunctory instructions from a friend, learned how to do a french braid on others and myself and enjoyed tarragon marinated crab (delicious). Oh, yes! Also survived a spinout on the way up. Wonder what other snow adventures I will have?

See you next month.
