Back in February or March there was a call for contibutions for "A [Physical Book] Which Compiles Conceptual Books by Various Artists" from Partial Press and is now an available print-on-demand from Lulu (curiosity abounds about this one ...) [Physical Book]: https://partialpress.net/2022/01/12/conceptual-books/

Even though this has nothing to do with paper or books I thought it would be interesting to hear what [clinkery a'a lava] from the latest Mauna Loa eruption December 2022 sounds like as it crawls down the flanks of the volcano. It also sounds very much like stepping on newly cooled pahoehoe lava (which I did back in 2002 when the park rangers mapped out a walk that allowed you to get within 10 feet of lava outbreaks) - very other worldly sounds [clinkery a'a lava]: https://youtu.be/tSwx1j20tWc

Musings and Meanderings

As this year winds down I realized that I have never done a wrap up of the year's happenings. I have been inspired by received Christmas newsletters and in looking back at 2022 it has been quite the year. The list below is as chronological as possible depending on memory, Google calendar and sometimes Google maps.

Jan: The last quarter of 2021 saw us transitioning to a new nutritional plan and this month saw us going on a trip to see if we could sustain eating healthier (also testing the waters about travel in general) - had a workshop session while on the trip so learned how to pack what I needed in smaller go bag (read plastic document holder looking like a suitcase) for crafting and origami

Feb: Enjoyed a 2nd class over zoom with my teacher from South Africa (1st one was in Jan), started a 12-week Chinese Thread Book (Zhen Xian Bao or ZXB) class, watched my beautiful cousin get married on zoom (they were in Malaysia and the borders had not opened up until April and pre-arrival testing stopped in June) and enjoyed a marvelous artists' book exhibit in San Diego over a long weekend

Mar: Traveled to Houston to support my brother in his time of grief - I grew closer to him during that time and the time leading up to the trip - we talk more now and for that I am grateful

Apr: Continued enjoyment of the ZXB workshop and making a Jade special birthday card for Bill (unfortunately was not very happy with it but then I have only been happy with one card that I have made for him)

May: Went on a driving trip that took us through 3 states (CA, OR and WA) & 3-weeks, had last session of ZXB workshop and worked up a sweat just pre-creasing a 10-foot long piece of paper during my very lovely Sitka residency (this brought in requests to teach in Oregon - I was so honored but turned them down)

Jun: Caught covid and still managed to attend a 3-week zoom workshop

Jul & Aug: Traveled to Singapore and Malaysia, released baby turtles, almost got pee'd on by an orangutan, attended high school reunion (and many other adventures), Bill caught covid and took a newsletter break since I started the newsletter in early 2017

Sep: Another lovely workshop starts and house sitting for a friend on the Big Island of Hawai'i (the last session happened on the island and really got into scavenged paper - brochures and maps), also folded a masu snowflake structure in 6 different sizes for a fundraiser before the trip

Oct: Yet another wonderful workshop and continuation of house sitting (1st session of this workshop on the island - it was lovely but that was before my coffee and so not a morning person LOL!)

Nov: Learned a new html-like language called Markdown to prepare for moving the newsletter from email to a newsletter platform

Dec: There was a driving trip planned to the San Francisco South Bay area and Mendocino that was canceled at the last minute as Bill then I caught either a cold or RSV which took way longer to get over than usual and a root canal, part 1, for me to round it all out for the month - part 2 will happen in early Jan

I hope that the new year brings more adventures and growth for all of us as we make another trip around our G-type star on this astounding planet we live on.

Resource List (maintained in my Dropbox account - close popup to view document)

  • Organizations from where I gather my information - Word or PDF

  • Teaching opportunities - Word or PDF format

  • On-demand workshops with pre-recorded videos and/or kits but no release dates - Word or PDF

  • My favorite paper places, both online and brick & mortar locations - Word or PDF (I am not affiliated, associated, authorized, endorsed by, or in any way officially connected with any of the companies listed. I merely enjoy their products and fantasize about what I can buy)
