Book & Paper Arts Calendar Updates - December 23, 2021

Hello everyone,

My musings and meanderings have been moved to the bottom of the newsletter so you can get to the crux of the matter - workshops, workshops and more workshops! Current musing -  folding as a meditative exercise.

Some Hedi news!! She will be teaching at the Paper Book Intensive (PBI) 2022 along with Ulla. Along with Gary Frost and Tim Barrett, Hedi is a co-founder of PBI. To apply for PBI 2022, please check this link on January 1, 2022 to fill out the online application - workshop schedule here

Found a new instructor in Cape Town, South Africa named Maia Lehr-Sacks on Instagram. Have had a workshop with her on a very cool book structure - very enjoyable and lots of information exchange. Her workshops are at various locations in Cape Town and Johannesburg (10 hour difference currently) and will work with you individually or a group virtually over zoom. Will definitely be having more classes with her in the future!

There is NPBAF and FOBA news below in the Things to see or do if you happen to be in the area section.

I have not heard from anyone about what to do with on-demand classes (instructors have pre-recorded workshops and/or kits but no release dates) and so for now I will place them as a document in the Resource section in my dropbox account.

I wish everyone peace and serenity this holiday season. Be well, stay creative and curious!

Some Christmas stars for you in ascending order of difficulty (based on my experience on making them - videos 1 and 2 use 8 pieces of paper, 3 and 4 a single sheet and same person instructing):

1) Paper star from 8 pieces of paper - https://youtu.be/ypwT5SOjFWg (also good demo of folding bird or preliminary base)
2) Paper star ornament (challenging) - https://youtu.be/Zbxxeej_PjA (very clear about how folds are done and how to squash them!)

4) 3D paper star - https://youtu.be/iszp_VfzBwU (ditto)

If you would like to start folding origami stars/mandalas/tatos I started with this teacher on youtube (very grateful for the often used pause button)

About the calendar and how to look for upcoming workshops

Link to the calendar: https://teamup.com/ksd9e12a80c3878ba5 (If the link is not working copy and paste it to your browser)

  • The time listed as you mouse over or press each entry or at the top of the entry when opened will be in the time zone of the listing organization. If a virtual/online workshop the times for other time zones will also be listed in the Description area along with a time zone converter

  • There is no difference between In-person1 (blue entries) and In-person2 (red entries) or Online1 (orange entries) and Online2 (light teal entries), just a way to visually separate workshops; purple entries are for festivals or conferences; yellow are public online meetings from various book arts guilds and museums; anything with ** are newly found workshops and events since the last newsletter was sent out

  • To change views in the calendar: on laptop/PC/tablet locate the 3 bar button [≡] upper right corner and select .. Day .. Week .. Month .. Agenda, List - on cellphone locate 3 bar button and select the down arrow button to the left of it and make your selection as above

  •  To move backwards or forwards in time in the calendar: on laptop/PC/tablet locate "Today" in the upper left corner and click on the single left facing arrow to back one time period (based on what view you have selected) and single right facing arrow to move one time period forward - on cellphone locate the ">>" button and to the right of that will be the single left & right facing arrow

  • Look for magnifying glass on your screen to do a Search by state, town, instructor name, time zone, keyword, etc. If one class is sold out search for a keyword from that class to see if another is available, for example, "masu" or "Sheehy". Do use the organization's workshop calendar listed in each calendar entry to see other disciplines/mediums being offered

  • The calendar is updated as I come across information and you have 24x7 access to it

  • You can add any calendar entry to your own personal calendar to help you keep track of meetings and workshops you will be attending. On interested entry either right click or touch & hold down your finger on the selected entry for a couple of seconds, select Share then select which calendar (Google, iCal, Outlook) you wish to add to. Be sure to update the time to your local time zone

Musings and Meanderings

I have been folding either mandalas (star-like structure from 6, 8 or 16 pieces of paper so far), tatos (5, 6, 8, 12 sided structures from a single sheet of paper) or tessellations (just started) almost every day as a meditative exercise since mid-November. The mandala and tato are my designations to keep multi-piece and single piece structures distinct. I joined a virtual meet and fold origami group that re-sparked the interest. Kept trying to select simpler structures by looking at the youtube thumbnails but it never turns out to be that way. Now I have to figure out a way to store all these structures. If you have an idea let me know and I will send you a paper slitter (works like this one but all nicely enclosed in plastic like this one - actually this one but could not find a video of it)

It has been a marvelous way to get to know the papers I am using and what tools I can use to help with some of the more complicated or miniscule folds I have made. Believe it or not a flat metal emery board with a blunt point has been very helpful. I also keep up a running dialogue in my head as I try to explain what I am doing as if teaching it to someone else. It has been helpful to have a little bit of fingernail on the thumb and index finger to help with folding to a point, as a brace or opening a fold to squash it (emery board helpful here, too). My frustration happens when I can't seem to get things to line up but I now know that I can refold even if I am past folding the base of the structure. I also should have proper lighting, a large enough flat, hard surface and hold the piece far away enough so that I can actually focus with my reading glasses. I am reminded that paper has memory, is actually pretty forgiving when you are folding (up to a point) and pre-creasing is your friend. I am becoming aware of how I fold - sometimes I roll, sometimes I brace, sometimes both, mostly I squint. I notice that the instructor's finger movements are reminiscent of mine. I am re-learning about landmarks that you use to setup and get the fold in the right place (a lot like using the bumps on your windshield wipers to help with parallel parking).

And sometimes because I am a sucker for punishment I fold a structure twice to get to "know" that particular fold I was struggling with (I get multiple tries with the mandalas and you can almost see the progression). I try not to get frustrated when I have to unfold everything I had done so far because that was all just pre-creasing and I am really only halfway through. In the end I'd like to think I am learning patience as I coax a structure out of my favorite medium - paper - and perseverance.

Resource List

  • A list of organizations from where I gather my information - Word document or PDF document - is maintained in my Dropbox account (you do not need to create an account to access this information)

  • A list of my favorite paper places, both online and brick & mortar locations - Word or PDF - ditto in my Dropbox (I am not affiliated, associated, authorized, endorsed by, or in any way officially connected with any of the companies listed. I merely enjoy their products and fantasize about what I can buy)

  • A list of on-demand workshops with pre-recorded videos and/or kits but no release dates - Word or PDF - also in Dropbox

  • Centralized area for hundreds of opportunities for artists - mostly residencies, some grant funding & galleries compiled by one person to encourage community. International, but with a US-lens. Assembled and maintained by Everest Pipkin - from US so it leans that way. You can also help by sending opportunities to add - see how to in spreadsheet.

  • Online juried shows - https://www.onlinejuriedshows.com/preDefault.aspx

  • Current art calls for entry list - all over US: https://www.entrythingy.com/forartists_calls (you will need to create an account to access the information)
