Book & Paper Arts Calendar Updates - December 17, 2018
Hello everyone,
It has been a while since I last sent out an update. My apologies as I have had house and lot hunting on the brain! We did not find "the" house while we were there but we did figure out that we did not want to be on the north side of the island. It is a little bit more windy, wet and cold (turned on the fire place a couple of times!) up there & the elevation is between 2,000' - 3,000'! The other good thing we did was that we did a dig deep into our finances! What did we have that was liquid, what was coming in & going out, how would the state of Hawaii tax our retirements, when would we start taking disbursements from our retirement accounts, etc. Found out the state of Hawaii is retiree friendly and that makes it all the more enticing to either move there or have a 2nd home there where you would then spend at least 200 days of the year.
So Newport Paper & Book Arts Festival (NPBAF) happening in April 2019 will be sending out their brochures via email! Focus on Book Arts (FOBA) is also happening in June 2019! One other event not related to books and paper but appeals to the collector in me is also happening in June 2019 - the International Beachcombing Conference (IBC 2019)! Road & adventure trip, anybody? I have already notified Bill to either come with or prepare to be alone in April and June. For more info see below in "Save the Date" section.
Speaking of beachcombing I managed to beachcomb twice. Sea glass was tiny but I was looking for black slag glass and sugar jade (green slag glass) and they were relatively abundant. You find these by where the old sugar mils used to be. They burned all their trash which melted the glass that was then thrown out into the ocean. As the giant chunks of glass were broken up they washed back up on shore as slag glass. I also got to meet a local character, Lava Man Ira, who was very generous in showing me where the bigger pieces of sea glass were as long as I did not mind getting wet. I had already been out there too long having promised Bill I was "only" going to be 20 minutes! I returned to the car a little out of breathe (my excuse is that I was rushing to get back to the car), mosquito-bitten (trudged through a slightly jungle-y trail) but happy!
Here's hoping you have time to take a workshop or 2!

Things to see or do/If you happen to be in the area ...
SDBA Members' Exhibit - California Native - Front Porch Gallery in Carlsbad, CA - now until Jan 5, 2019.
University of Arizona, Tucson - Joseph Gross Gallery - celebrates 50 years of the photographic artists’ book - now - Jan. 14, 2019. The books in this exhibition use the book form as an original, creative genre incorporating photographic images coupled with an acute awareness of the artistic possibilities of the book.
I saw my first Little Free Library (LFL) at FOBA at Pacific University in Forest Grove, OR. I have seen a couple that are not mentioned in the LFL locations: one is south of the Railroad Museum in Lomita, CA and the other is in the LAPD Harbor Division in San Pedro, CA. Where have you seen LFLs?

All things internet ...
Cute and short animation! I don't have an old Rubik's cube but I do have a mini one - each side is the size of a quarter!
Travel to the International Space Station instead of just watching it from the ground.

All things paper
Gifts for the paper aficionado in your life
For the Matthew Shlian fans out there

There were some newly found workshops that did not make this list as I was still working on getting them into the calendar when they pushed out the summary list.
