Book & Paper Arts Calendar Updates - August 23, 2021

Hello everyone,

When we first met Luca, a black cat, from when we were house sitting back in October 2019 he was just a kitten. He had to have his shots (the cat not Bill) and when we got home Bill put him next to his chest, they took a nap together (one of my all time favorite pictures of the 2 of them) on the floor and they became best buddies. After that it was playing together, watching anime together, more napping together! Luca did not want to have anything to do with me until a few days before we left. He decided that he was going to be in my lap, purring, while I was writing an email to his mom about how to prep him for when he was to be neutered right after she got home. If only he knew!

I was bound and determined in 2021 that he would like me. I learned all I could about cat behavior so I could gain his trust! For the first few days he hid from us during the day and unabashedly used us (well, mostly me) as his doorman during the night. Eventually he did show up watching us from the kitchen counter or dining room table. I would try to catch him just after he woke up and would "groom" him with my thumbs, like a mother cat licking her kittens, around his head. I also massaged his spine from just below his skull and almost to his tail. I knew he was a little stressed from sharing his domain with 2 other feral cats that his mom was feeding. But it worked! Eventually he would sit on my placemat on the dining table and sleep on my side of the bed if I was still up late. I was honored with head bonks and the best thing was a picture I took with him with both my arms around him and him allowing it. I was most happy. Still I wonder if he just found my scent more interesting or if he enjoyed being called "mah handsome boi" in a slight South African accent (from the Lion Whisperer dude).

In other news we went to the desert to watch the Perseids and instead of a shower it turned out to be more of a drizzle. It was still wonderful - we saw fireballs, stargrazers (long meteor trails in the sky, meteors of different colors - the frequency was just a lot lower than even the Orionids we watched last October. It was also a little hazy and we may have been watching in the wrong direction - directly towards the Milky Way. Turns out the shower happened a few nights later even though the peak was supposed to have been when we were there. As we were out and about we also almost ran over a number of small, cute critters like roadrunners and cute baby squirrels with tufted ears but luckily saw them in time. May head back out there for the Geminids in December if it is not too crazy. Apple cider in Julian, anyone?

Be well, curious and creative!

====================About the calendar

Link to the calendar: https://teamup.com/ksd9e12a80c3878ba5 (If the link is not working copy and paste it to your browser)

  • The time listed as you mouse over each entry or at the top of the entry when opened will be in the time zone of the listing organization. If it is a virtual/online workshop the times for other time zones will also be listed in the Description area

  • There is no difference between In-person1 (blue entries) and In-person2 (red entries), just a way to visually separate in-person workshops; ditto with Online1 (orange entries) and Online2 (light teal entries) are also visual separations for online workshop; purple entries are for festivals or conferences;  yellow are public online meetings from various book arts guilds and museums; anything with ** are newly found workshops, meetings, presentations, etc. since the last newsletter was sent out

  • You can do a search (look for magnifying glass on your screen) by state, town, instructor name, time zone, keyword, etc. If it is the calendar you can search on that word. If one class is sold out search for a keyword from that class to see if another is available, for example, "masu" or "Sheehy". Do use the organizations workshop calendar listed in each calendar entry to see other disciplines are being offered

  • Monthly view is best viewed using a larger monitor with desktop or laptop. To change view look for the 3 bars (≡) in upper right corner of screen and click on appropriate view to the left of it

  • If using a cell phone or you wish to view upcoming workshops change view to List or Agenda view using button with the down arrow (v)in upper right corner of screen and select either "One month" or "Three months"

  • The calendar is updated at least once a week (unless the wifi is spotty while traveling) and you have 24x7 access to it

  • You can add any calendar entry to your own personal calendar to help you keep track of meetings and workshops you will be attending. On any entry either right click or touch & hold down your finger on the selected entry for a couple of seconds, select Share then select which calendar (Google, iCal, Outlook) you wish to add to
