Book & Paper Arts Calendar Updates - April 21, 2019
Hello everyone,
Been a little busy planning for our Hwy 1/101 road trip and getting ready for NPBAF. Where do we stay, what adventures will we have, what to bring for NPBAF workshops! Will be catching up with friends, excited to meet new friends who read this newsletter at the festival and looking for lighthouses, whales & butterflies, beachcombing, staying in towns we normally pass through and stopping by our usual favorites. If anyone has any recommendations about the many towns along Hwy 101 in OR and Hwy 1 in CA would you let me know about your favorite beaches, stops, hikes, restaurants, etc.?
Have also been looking at birds outside our bedroom window and while driving (well ... as a passenger). We had a sheriff's helicopter circling above our house the other day and several birds decide to take refuge in the bushes close by. Saw the usual sparrows but also a tufted titmouse and yellow throated warbler, heard the hawks that nest in the eucalyptus tree every spring complain about the noise. I am sure there were more but I don't have a birder's eye! However I have been enjoying watching the hummingbirds and ravens along our cliff side walks, crows using the thermals off large buildings to gain height for their aerobatics, the red tail hawk mated pair along the 405 freeway - one taking a rest while the other dive bombed (you could tell from the wing attitude) their mate playfully (I am anthropomorphizing, of course). I am afraid of heights but have always wondered what it would be like to fly like a bird - sigh! I hope I see many more bird "vignettes" on our trip.
Here's hoping you have the opportunity to take a workshop or 2!

All things paper/books
Michaels is looking for teachers. Submit your proposal!
You know how I love all things small - you can either download the plans for your very own 3D printed printmaking press or get one from Kickstarter or just read the article.
Video of Mary Sullivan of Crowing Hens Bindery - I love the machine she uses to punch all sewing stations at once (at 1:39) in each section/signature instead of punching each one with an awl. Al R. - will you make me one? You'd have to be able to change the positions of the "nails"!

Tips
Wanna give a kid or an adult something unique? How about a street sign with their name? Or a parking sign for axolotls only? Checked out this website! I bought signs for my immediate family and made a family tree in the 2nd bedroom where there is no place for people to sleep!
