Book & Paper Arts Calendar Updates - April 2, 2019
Hello everyone,
Happy April! Had a wonderful but exhausting trip to Guatemala. Lots of catching up with Bill's relatives and a couple of trips outside of Guatemala City. Antigua is even more crowded now but Panajachel on the shores of Lake Atitlan (surrounded by 5 volcanoes) was beautiful. Turns out my Spanish was NOT as far along as I thought. Google Translate helped but they sure spoke fast! Favorite person I met - a tiny 77-year old woman named Manuela, who came up to my chest, sold me a shawl I wasn't even looking for. She walks almost 2 hours every day from her village in Santa Catarina Palopo to Panajachel with her wares on top of her head, then walks around Panajachel to sell her woven items and then another almost 2 hours back to her village. I thought she was amazing with her wonderful attitude so much so that I wanted to take her home with me. Instead we chatted about her issues with her knees and I asked to take a picture with her which I will always treasure.
Guess what? Julie Chen is having a workshop at Penland in June. Please see the June 23rd entry for "Artists’ Books: Ideation in Action". Also Julie Chen exhibit at U of W Suzzallo and Allen Libraries (see below).
If you have been looking for a Martha Stewart scoring board, Amazon is now carrying it for less than what it used to sell for.
Some more sad news: Castle In the Air in Berkeley will be closing it's doors at the end of April. If you happen to be in the area they will be liquidating much of their in-store and online stock and shop fixtures in sales over the coming weeks. I hope to stop by on the way up to Newport, OR (taking my own advice about combining a trip with a workshop or vice versa) for NPBAF on our annual spring (well, we haven't done it for a couple of years) Hwy 1 trip. We like to explore towns we have not visited before as well as stop by old favorites.
Here's hoping you have the opportunity to take a workshop or 2!
