Redux

I saw YOUARENOWHERE again and though I said it was a show of two halves, I didn't realise just how true that was. That means that the recommendation is also a two-parter: YOUARENOWHERE is not just a show that you must see, but it's a show that insists on being seen twice.

My first time was eclipsed by the visceral, by the sensations that are immediate and impossible to ignore. There is a part of the show that can only be seen the first time - a 'you had to be there' moment in time.

As for the words, I thought it was a dearth that stopped me loving the show the first time. But seeing it again, the abundance of words is clear. You might even say there is a double-speak. Schneider performs for one for a tiny moment in the show. I had the spine-tingling pleasure of being that person second time around, of receiving words meant only for me (that night, anyway). But that's not the only reason I felt the words much more deeply second time around. When before, I thought that death-at-climax was mine, this time I realised that death is present in an altogether different way.

YOUARENOWHERE is sophisticated and elegantly structured. It is also a full-fat experience, pulling no punches with light and sound. It's a show you feel, it's a show that pulls the rug from under your feet. But it's also a show where the fine texture can go unnoticed. So do yourself a favour: see the show once to electrify the body and blow the mind; see the show twice to strain the sinews of the heart. Because, as Mum said when she explained sex: once is not enough.
