Dehd, Dad Thoughts
Thinking about how much I enjoy Dehd's new album has me thinking about my dad for some reason, and I simply refuse to get to the bottom of it.
Dehd’s new album, Poetry, is really good and I can’t stop listening to it. It gives me strong Born Ruffians’ UNCLE, DUKE & THE CHIEF vibes, an album I couldn’t stop listening to the year that it came out because it gave me strong Dr. Dog’s Fate vibes, an album I still return to often because I love how it makes me feel nostalgic for a time and a place (you know, basically how nostalgia works). Something about the way these albums hit my ears endear me to them and keep me coming back.
This particular type of obsession is not unique to me, I know, but it’s a trait I identify as being passed down to me from my father. He would become obsessed with an album and had no trouble listening to it endlessly on repeat for weeks. He would often find one or two tracks that he’d be really tickled by, and would hyper-fixate on a particular line or part of a solo, or even sometimes just the way a drummer (he was a drummer in his youth) would play a syncopated run on a ride cymbal. He would tap the drum parts on the steering wheel with his fingers as he drove anywhere.
That’s another trait I picked up from him. When I started driving over half my life ago, I too would tap (or sometimes full-on drum) on the steering wheel (though I played trumpet). I taught myself very poor form for playing kickdrum with my left foot while driving. When Rock Band came out, I had to retrain my legs to play kick with my right foot instead and became ambidextrous with my feet, playing the game with my right foot (I’m right-handed) but still kickdrumming with my left while driving; this is the most interesting thing about my feet, and I thank my dad for it.
Thanks, dad!
At any rate: Poetry. It’s a good album! I don’t know that there’s anything to hyper-fixate over on it, but the album’s full of earworms and I appreciate it for making me feel and think of all these things lately.
Thanks, Dehd!
