Underground's Gorillaz x Daft Punk Night + New Mix

Just a quick update for two reasons. The first is that I’m back in the DJ booth at Club Underground this Friday night. For those of you who turned up on the dance floor last week, thank you so much for making the night a good one. (You can see the set list on Beatique. It’s filled with songs like “Police on My Back,” “(We Don’t Need This) Fascist Groove Thang” and “The Happy Dictator” for what should be obvious reasons.) This week at Underground is Gorillaz x Daft Punk night, which is my favorite theme. Both floors of Grand Star Jazz Club will be open with Larry G. and I DJing all night. You can get tickets now on Eventbrite or Dice. If you’re looking for something to do the rest of the weekend, I have a few recommendations, including the fourth anniversary party for VHS shop WHAMMY! and a city pop/Japanese rare groove party in Little Tokyo and more.
The other thing is that I have a new set up now on Mixcloud. It’s more like a college radio show where I don’t have to beep out the profanity, but it gets a little clubby at the end. In it, you’ll hear new music from ADULT. and Kneecap, old music from The Cramps and The Clash and more that will hopefully come as a surprise.

Album review:
Sam Quealy Jawbreaker
A few years ago, I saw Sam Quealy open for La Femme here in Los Angeles and was blown away by her set. The singer and dancer, who is based in Paris, performs with all the intensity of midnight on the dancer floor and her latest album, Jawbreaker, does an excellent job of capturing that energy. It’s a little ‘80s dance pop and a little electroclash - like Stacey Q meets Chicks on Speed- with splashes of hyperpop and darkwave. So far, “Strings of Terror,” a dark disco epic, is my top pick off the album. Don’t be surprised if you start hearing it in my sets soon.
That’s it for this week. Hope to see some of you on the dance floor at Club Underground this Friday, February 6.
