The Divine Comedy, The Cords and More New Music

I’m writing this week’s newsletter while listening to some new-old vinyl that I picked up at Salt Box Records the other day, including the ridiculous and amazing Bumblebee Unlimited single “Love Bug,” (If you’ve never heard it, I recommend clicking on the link in the song tile for a YouTube clip) as well as 45s from Ultravox and Goûts de Luxe. This isn’t an ad, I just always find gems in the Salt Box bins and recommend stopping by if you’re in Little Tokyo.

Anyhow, Klub Nocturno is back at Catch One tonight and online tickets are sold out. There will be very few available at the door, so if you don’t have a ticket and still want to go, show up early. The line starts at 8:30 p.m. and doors are at 9:30 p.m. More info on Instagram. I’ll be in Room One this time around, playing a rock and Español and cumbia set. As for the rest of the weekend and early next week, there are a lot of cool shows happening around L.A. that still have tickets available. Check out my recommendations, which include both budget-friendly shows and some of the higher-priced ones.

The Divine Comedy has a new album out and it’s excellent. Check out my review  of Rainy Sunday Afternoon, as well as my review of Suede’s new album, Antidepressants, which came out earlier in September.

There are two new interviews up on Beatique this week as well. From Columbus, Ohio, Moviola has been making music since the 1990s. The band’s latest album, Earthbound, is out now and includes the earworm “Slage Wave.” I love the song’s video, where employees of Don’t Tiny Weenies toil over a grill, dishing up Doge Dogs and Pigs on a Golf Course, until they meet two customers with pro-labor messages. We talked about the video and more in our Zoom chat.

Two years ago, The Cords played their first gig, opening for the Vaselines in Glasgow. Today, their self-titled debut album is released. I talked to sisters Grace and Eva Tedeschi about the whirlwind couple years they’ve had. If you’re a fan of ‘80s and ‘90s indie pop bands, like Shop Assistants and Heavenly, then you really need to hear The Cords.

That’s all for this week. Thank you for reading and hope to see you on the dance floor.
