So Much to Do, So Little Time

If you live in L.A. and you don’t have a mountain of work to turn in before Thanksgiving, get out of the house and have some fun because there are a lot of great events happening around town over the next few days. Tonight, there are three 🔥 DJ nights happening within walking distance of each other in Chinatown. Tomorrow is Philosophical Research Society’s courtyard sale and fundraiser raffle. Plus, on Tuesday, at PRS, you can catch the world premiere of the new Brian Jonestown Massacre film and, yes, there are still tickets available. Shockingly, there are also still tickets available to see The Mars Volta at Pasadena Civic on Wednesday, including seats that are under $40. Plus, it’s at a venue that’s Metro adjacent. There are also still tickets available for Dub Club on Wednesday night, with special guest Sister Nancy. For info on these and more events, head over to Beatique.

As for my next DJ gig, it’s one week from tonight, November 28, at Nocturno. Tickets are available on Dice.

Gotta keep this email short because, in case the opening paragraph didn’t tip you off, I have a pile of work to get through before Thanksgiving. There are two new interviews for you to read this week. One is with Nora Keyes, who has been active in L.A.’s DIY music scene for many years and currently plays in the improvisational psychedelic band Elf Freedom. Nora, who is also a visual artist (with a piece in the current group show at MutMuz in Chinatown), will be reuniting with her old band, The Centimeters, for the Spaceland Reunion happening on November 29.

Over on the other side of the U.S., poet and musician Karen Schoemer recently released the album August, a collection of poems set to music contributed by Mike Watt, Amy Rigby and a host of others. The project was inspired by the late poet and experimental writer Bernadette Mayer and was partially written on the property where Herman Melville penned Moby Dick. We talked about all that in the interview below.

And, if you’re looking for something to read, do check out The Ferryman and His Wife by Frode Grytten. It’s fantastic.

That’s it for now. See you on the dance floor next weekend.
