Nuovo Testamento Interview, New Alison Goldfrapp and More

Last weekend, I went to The Smell for the first time in IDK how many years. The occasion was HLLLYH, which is an offshoot of The Mae Shi, a band that I saw at The Smell more than once back in the ‘00s. I was pleasantly surprised that very little about the all ages, DIY venue had changed considering how many times downtown Los Angeles and, really, the world, has morphed in the past 20 years. The night got me thinking about spaces and events that are made to be enjoyed IRL, instead of existing in real life for the purpose of posting online.

Last month, Nuovo Testamento released their latest EP, Trouble. For this collection of five songs, the L.A.-based trio veers towards the sounds of the 1990s, specifically house and Eurodance, and it resulted in some real earworms. I talked to the band about the album for a story that ran yesterday.

This week, I have two album recommendations for you. The first is Piqued, the final solo album from Jeffrey Runnings, who is best known for fronting For Against and, sadly, died earlier this year. It’s a beautiful album, both in sound and packaging. The second is Flux, the new solo album from Alison Goldfrapp. It’s more eclectic than The Love Invention and draws from her musical legacy, while putting a contemporary pop spin on the songs. I just posted my review of Flux, which came out today.

No DJ gigs for me this week, but I do have weekend recommendations for those of you in Los Angeles. If you want to see what made it into last weekend’s set at Nocturno, the playlist is up. Next up for me is Club Underground on Friday, August 22, for Yeah Yeah Yeahs x Siouxsie Night. Tickets are available now on Dice and Eventbrite.

That’s it for now. Thank you for reading and hope to see you on the dance floor soon.
