Mareux's New Album and a Classic from Heaven 17

Image is a flyer for Klub Nocturno at Catch One on June 28, 2025 and lists a rock en español vs. cumbia room, new wave vs. darkwave room, Deftones Night, Reggaeton room and Banda vs. Quebraditas room

This Saturday, I’ll be back at Klub Nocturno to play in the new wave vs. darkwave room. I have all the bangers, from The Cure to Boy Harsher, in my queue, as well as the new album from Mareux, Nonstop Romance, which is fantastic. This month’s Nocturno party is a full-venue takeover at Catch One, so there are five rooms of dancing with a little something for everyone. Half of the profits will benefit families who have been impacted by ICE. If you’re 21+ and in L.A. this weekend, get your tickets now on Dice.

Earlier in the day on Saturday, Analog Outlaw Book and Record Fair is happening at 2220 Arts + Archives. I went to the first Analog Outlaw last year and it’s a great counterculture marketplace, so I talked to the founders, James and Crystal, about this year’s event.

I also talked to Tim Byron of how his efforts to reform The Mae Shi resulted in new band HLLLYH, who have a terrific new album, Uruburu, out today. Back in the ‘00s, The Mae Shi were one of the breakout stars of L.A.’s DIY scene and HLLLYH retains a lot of the energy from that era, while still evolving musically.

Other than that, I’ve had “(We Don’t Need This) Fascist Groove Thang,” the Heaven 17 song, stuck in my head for most of the week, kind of because I found the 45 at Salt Box in Little Tokyo, but also because it’s still very much the mood right now.

Some updates on future events:

On July 5, I’ll be playing records at Bigfoot Lodge in Los Feliz. Start time is 10 p.m. and it’s 21+. There’s no cover.

July 18 is Club Underground’s Pulp Party. Both rooms floors of the Grand Star will be open and I’ll be DJing with Larry G. Tickets are available now on Dice.

Saturday, August 2 is the opening of “Monday Nights: L.A.’s Scene of the Century 2005-2016” at Leiminspace in Chinatown. This is a gallery show of photos and ephemera from Sean Carnage’s series of Monday night shows where bands like The Mae Shi, Health, Captain Ahab and so many more played. That’s it for now. Thanks so much reading. Hope to see some of you on the dance floor soon.
