LACMA's Newest Space + Recent Stories and Tonight's DJ Gig

I have two new stories out now that I wanted to share with you. The first is an interview with Heavenly. The English indie band recently released their first new album in thirty years, Highway to Heavenly, and will be playing Los Angeles in June. I had the chance to chat with the band recently for Music Connection.
Late last year, Your Shot, a DJ boot camp and competition from Australia, held its first event in Los Angeles. I met with some of the student DJs and had the chance to dance to some of their sets at Catch One, then wrote about it for Premium, the subscriber magazine for Southern California News Group’s papers. The story is paywalled, but, hopefully, this gift link will work for you. If it doesn’t work and you have a Los Angeles Public Library card, you can login through the library’s site.

In other news, LACMA’s David Geffen Galleries are officially opening this weekend. I went to the press preview this week and roamed through the impressive collection, which you can read about on my own blog, Beatique.

For those of you in Los Angeles, tonight is Darkwave night at Club Underground. Both floors of Grand Star Jazz Club will be open. I’ll be in one room playing the darkwave, synth, electro jams, etc. Larry G. will be in the other playing Britpop, indie, etc. Advance tickets are available now, but you can also pick them up at the door, which opens tonight at 9:30 p.m.
If you’re looking for something to do later this weekend or early next week, check out my recommendations, which include a Saturday night synth show at The Smell, Cumbia de Mi Tierra exhibition at Human Resources, the L.A. Record Fair, a René Laloux double feature at Philosophical Research Society and more. And if you need some tunes to play at home, the April edition of Beatique is up on Mixcloud. It includes new music from Kneecap, Ladytron and Slayyyter, flashbacks from Armand Van Helden, Huggy Bear and Deltron 3030, plus lots more.
That’s it for this week. Hope to see you on the dance floor.
