Independent Project Records 45th Anniversary Party Recap + More From This Week

Thanks to those of you who were at Club Underground on Halloween and Klub Nocturno on November 1. Both were so much fun and it was great to see so many people out on the dance floor.
The past week went by so quickly and now I’m trying to remember everything that happened while writing this. The Dodgers won the World Series again on Saturday night. Monday was the parade. Since I live in the neighborhood, I walked down to the parade route to check it out. They didn’t have anything going on inside Grand Park, like last year, so the sidewalks were jam packed. Once the parade let up, the street was a see of Dodger blue for as far as I could see. Here’s a photo I took in the middle of Grand Ave., in between the Music Center and Grand Park, to give you an idea of what it was like.

On Tuesday, I went with a friend to see One Battle After Another, the new Paul Thomas Anderson movie. It’s playing all over L.A. right now, so if you have the chance to see it, do it. The performances are excellent, the story is excellent. It’s loosely based on Thomas Pynchon’s novel, Vineland. I haven’t read the book, but, from what I know about it, it seems like the kind of story that translates to today and One Battle After Another is absolutely the kind of movie that will resonate with people who have been following the news this year. The movie is nearly three hours long, but the pacing is very fast. I didn’t realize how much time had elapsed when the lights in the theater came up and I pulled out my phone and saw texts that Prop 50 passed and Mamdani won the New York mayoral election.

Last night, I headed to Gold-Diggers for the second night of Independent Project Records’ 45th anniversary party. It was a fantastic event. Kommunity FK played a short set packed with old school post-punk/deathrock faves, including “Something Inside Me Has Died.” I interviewed Patrik Mata of Kommunity FK recently and you can check out the story below.

We also got to see Alison Clancy. I was unfamiliar with her work before last night, but was so impressed by her set. The music is amalgamation of drone and shoegaze and she incorporates dance into the live performance. Shiva Burlesque followed with a set that included by old and new songs from the ‘80s alt band, as well as a song from their earlier band, Torn Boys, and a cover of “White Light/White Heat.”

David J, who played bass with Shiva Burlesque last night, performed solo after that, opening with the Bauhaus song “Who Killed Mr. Moonlight?” There was a protest theme going on in the earlier portion of the set, which included his song “The Rape of the Rose Garden” and led into his latest single, “ICE to Cold to Thaw,” the live version closer to the “sad jazz version” that’s on the B-side. I recently had the chance to talk to David J about the single.

That’s it for now. I’m not DJing this weekend, but, if you’re looking to hit the dance floor, Club Underground is tonight at Grand Star Jazz Club and Décadanse Soirée is Saturday night, also at the Grand Star, and I definitely recommend both.
See you on the dance floor!
