Girl Power Nite at Club Underground + Grrrl Gang, Boiled in Lead and More

March is Women’s History Month and this Friday, March 20, is Girl Power Nite at Club Underground. Both floors of the Grand Star Jazz Club will be open, so it will be two clubs for a single cover price. I’ll be in the Girl Power room, playing everything from Siouxsie and the Banshees to Le Tigre to Boy Harsher to Wet Leg. Larry G. will be in the ‘80s room. A bonus: If you’re going to see Peaches and Pixel Grip at The Bellwether on Friday night, show your ticket at the door for $5 entry. If you want to get advance tickets head over to Dice or Eventbrite. Doors are at 9:30 p.m. and Club Underground is 21+.
One show that I’m looking forward to seeing this weekend is Grrrl Gang at The Smell on Sunday, March 22. The Indonesian punk band is in the midst of their first ever U.S. tour and their new song “Lapdog,” which you might have heard on my March mix, is one of my current favorites. Recently, I had the chance to interview Grrrl Gang. Check it out below.

There are a few other cool shows and events coming up within the next week, including Anja Huwe of Xmal Deutschland (who I interviewed last year) next Wednesday. Head over to Beatique for the roundup.
I also had the chance to interview long-running Celtic punk band Boiled in Lead, whose new album, King of the Dogwoods, is out on Friday. Check out the story below.

Last weekend, I stopped by the Geffen Contemporary at MOCA in Little Tokyo and saw Monuments. A collaboration between MOCA and The Brick, the exhibition juxtaposes decommissioned monuments with contemporary art to explore U.S. post-Civil War history. There’s a lot to see, and a lot to think about, while walking through the exhibition, so I might go again. Click the story below for my first impressions.

Monuments runs at the Geffen Contemporary at MOCA through May 3. Do try to catch this important exhibition.
That’s it for this week. Hope to see some of you on the dance floor at Underground this Friday.
