March 2023
YOUR THIRD BULLETIN FROM BART
December and January are arguably too long. February is too short, but at long last we have arrived in March. Unseasonable weather was felt in most parts of the United States. While it was warm for some, it was cold for others; an allegory for February itself? Cold for me- a pretty tough month actually. I found myself at the courthouse waiting for juror selection 4 different days, just riddled with anxiety. I had too many commitments to be able to pick up a month long murder trial. In the end I was released after speaking my views on policing. At work we picked up speed on our goal of moving my store and our home office. Movers came last weekend. We’re still setting up the new place but the finish line is in sight! An allegory for Winter itself?
Here’s some stuff to check out as we embark upon this new month:
Listening-
Richard Hell and the Voidoids- Blank Generation. Tom Verlaine passed away in January. If you haven’t listened to his band Television, you’re missing out. I discovered them this past year and was in a stretch of enjoying their music when I heard the news of his death. My Album Club1 friend also had a Television/early punk heavy year. We corresponded after I sent him an LP from Richard Hell2 and the Voidoids. Enjoy a little punk history and jam out to music that inspired the Sex Pistols. (Apple Music linked in song title).
Reading-
Submarine Cable Map -Did you know there are actually wires connecting the continents with internet? It honestly never occurred to me. There’s something romantic about the analog contact of internet connection.
Clever design- Coca-Cola adds tethered closures to boost PET recycling in Europe
Some American Textile History - I served Juror Selection Hell with a former curator of the Pasadena Museum of History and he shared that there is an upcoming quilt exhibit I should check out. Looking forward to it! Because February is National Black History Month I also saw a few highlights about Gees Bend Quilts. If you’re unfamiliar definitely check them out. If you enjoy viewing paintings you will enjoy a quilt of this caliber. I studied Needle Arts as an unofficial minor in college and have had the privilege of seeing some of them in person. I’ll be checking out this exhibit at The Huntington this spring as well.
and Eating-
New method for Chili Crisp Egg
I’ve been told this is a viral ticktock but I only just became aware of it. My colleague suggested that I cook the egg IN chili crisp instead of merely drizzling to finish. Check out this sexy hot egg in my frigid apartment:

Lao Gan Ma Trader Joe’s Crunchy Chili Onion3

A Quote-
“Survival is insufficient” - Station Eleven (Emily St. John Mandel) by way of Star Trek Voyager.
What are you doing this month to thrive, not just survive?
If you’ve found anything worth sharing please consider forwarding to a friend or sharing on social media.
Album Club is like a book club but for listening to records. We do a holiday exchange called Secret Satan
Hell was a member of Television.
Be weary of cooking directly in any chili crisp that could burn like this. I recommend drizzling on top of the eggs as they cook then do a quick flip, finish and out.
