January 2024- Bart Bulletin

January 2024
We moved platforms! Why? Substack has dubious morals specifically with regard to queer respect and nazis. Because I am no longer engaging with Twitter/X and Instagram, this kind of information can take longer to reach me and honestly it’s a bummer to read about, so I often scroll past it if I see it. It can sometimes take longer for bad info to be registered with me; It’s a self preservation tactic that I have enabled for the past few years. I’m grateful that I’m able to ignore it to keep my brain from imploding, but I recognize the privilege (and irresponsibility) of this. I subscribe to a handful of newsletters myself and a good deal of them are moving this year in order to start the new year fresh on a new platform that doesn’t endorse nazis and transphobia; We’re following suit. The new site is called Buttondown. Let’s resolve in 2024 to pay a little more attention and make decisions that reflect our core values.
Paid Subscribers- Everything should be moved seamlessly but please reach out if something is weird on your end. Payments are attached to Stripe and not Substack (or BOtto down) specifically. I’m working on setting up new paid subscriptions with the new Buttondown publishing system. If you’ve paid to help fund this project I can’t express how much I appreciate you. It’s very cool to be paid for your work and I invested my earnings into a piece of furniture that I often sit on to write. Cool! Thank you.
Listening-
I have been enjoying music and movies from the 60s for the last few years and recently started listening to more Nancy Wilson. There is something so catchy about this number that just makes me want to be a character in a rom-com.
Nancy Wilson- (You don’t know) How Glad I am

Reading-
This is the book I read in 2023 that I have recommended the most. I don’t believe it made it into the bulletin yet but it was highly thought provoking and comes up in conversation frequently especially amongst the movie obsessed Joybird offices. Just last month someone was saying their favorite director was Woody Allen if he weren’t Woody Allen. (Everyone’s eyes got big and gritted their teeth, lol).
The book investigates separating (or not) the art from the artist. One of my favorite things about it is that she will stop herself after saying ‘we’ and redefine that as ‘I’. It’s the idea of taking ownership of your own opinion. In the age of the Internet, I think it’s a great practice to enable: speaking for oneself and not the masses.

Joie De Vivre-
As part of my resolutions this year I am making a list of things that enrich my life. If I can have a reminders list of when to clean my toilet then why not have a list of things to remind myself to have a good time and not get sucked into the daily grind?

Here’s my list:
Eat at an new restaurant
Take an outdoor walk
Hang out with a friend
See a movie in a theatre
Listen to one of my LPs
Create something (new recipe, knitting, other handicrafts, revolutions etc)
I absolutely put it in my reminders app and intend to add to it as I am reminded of life’s simple pleasures. Please let me know what is on your Joie De Vivre list whether you program it into your app or not.
Eating-

Lizzie, talking about Hockey??? Unheard of.
Interested in talking with other hockey watchers? We have a discord group with a wide array of hockey knowledge participants: People who are brand new to hockey and people who are returning for the first time in many years. There are people who know only what I’ve taught them with my hockey slideshow and people who played in their youth and have followed hockey most of their adult lives. Whatever your level, you belong in here!

A big focus of the group is the newly formed Professional Women’s Hockey League which began Jan 1st this year and features games accessible to all via YouTube. Now is a great time to get into hockey if you’re resolving to be more of a jock this year. Join us!
Also there are sooooo many NY Rangers fans in the group PLEASE join if you’re a fan of a different team. I’m becoming Rangers-pilled, which just cannot stand as an Islanders fan!!! (And don’t worry hockey will not become a permanent fixture of the bulletin, if you want to talk hockey join the discord).
