The 2022 Scoop from Ibadan Techies Club

Ibadan Techies Club
IBTC FridayOut Newsletter#22

Hey Techie!!

It’s Friday 🤗 again, and we are super excited to publish another issue of our newsletter.

It’s been a while since our last publication, we have been working behind the scenes to ensure we serve you better.

We had our last meetup for the year on Saturday 26th November 2022. We were privileged to be joined by club backers Jason Palmer and Ije. They spoke about “Product thinking for Engineers” and “Being a Black woman in tech” respectively.

Other amazing speakers were David, who spoke about overcoming imposter Syndrome, and Kishii, who spoke about Her Journey into Software development.

2022 has been a really exciting year for the club ✨. Here are some of our achievements, and you should be proud of us:

  • we started the first-of-its-kind 🙀 formidable, loving, inclusive, and intentional tech club in Ibadan.

  • we held 10+ in-person meetups (both technical and general meetups).

  • The club is formally recognized as an organization under the Nigerian law.

  • we had lots of exceptional speakers who discussed with us about exciting and educative topics. Some of the speakers we hosted included Mark Nfonido, Mekuleyi Michael, Jude Eyene, and Aloba to mention but a few.

  • Members of the club have also had the opportunity to network, learn and be a part of a real tech community.

The club is using this medium to thank all our Sponsors and members for making 2022 successful. Plans are already being made to ensure we serve you better next year.

Some of the cool stuff to expect next year, 2023:

  • sub-community-centered conferences and you hosting techies from all over the country.

  • Workshop experience. Where you get to have a custom learning experience on a topic you are truly passionate about.

  • Webinars and Hackathons.

These are only a few surprises, and we can’t wait to achieve these and more together with you.

Welcome to IBTCFridayOut#22 of the Ibadan Techies Club! This newsletter serves two purposes, a technical newsletter for techies worldwide and an update channel for the members of the Ibadan Techies Club and techies in Nigeria. This fantastic and carefully crafted newsletter was curated by Iykee and edited by Kelvinsekx.

THE WEEK GIST IN REVIEW

Elon Musk’s Twitter cannot stay out of the news

Since the acquisition of Twitter by billionaire Elon Musk, the social media company has always been in the news. The latest one is Twitter files. Twitter files are a group of classified Twitter documents being released by Elon Musk in collaboration with some top journalists.

Twitter files shed light on some user moderation and censoring decisions taken by the company over the years. The most notable among them was the decision to permanently ban former US president Donald Trump on January 8th, 2021, for ‘inciting Violence’.

Evidence from some of the Twitter files released shows that top executives working at Twitter at that time did not believe that Donald Trump’s tweet went against the company’s policies or incited violence. The document reveals that the ban on Trump’s Twitter account was mostly due to pressure from within and outside Twitter.

The files have sparked debates online. some believe Twitter made the right decision by banning Trump’s account while others believe the social media giant crossed a line they shouldn’t have. Read some of the debates here

Is ChatGpt coming for our jobs?

ChatGPT is a prototype artificial intelligence chatbot developed by OpenAI. OpenAI is an artificial intelligence laboratory in San Francisco Founded by Sam Altman, Elon Musk, and others. Elon Musk seems to be everywhere 🙄.

Since the launch of the prototype in November, social media especially Twitter has been agog with some of the amazing things this chatbot can do.
