Treasure Coast Indivisible Notes
Happy Valentine’s Day to those who celebrate
Lots of notes today.
First from Krista Storey:
Happy Friday - but unfortunately not a good day for voting rights, civil rights or school safety. I am asking you to take some time this weekend to reach out to our state and federal legislators in reference to 4 things. If Minnesota residents can protest for days in below zero weather, the very least that we can do is make calls and send emails. Step Up and Speak Out. Democracy is at risk.
Bad Legislation #1. On Wednesday, Congressional Republicans (plus one Democrat from Texas🤔) , including our "esteemed" Representative Brian Mast, voted to approve the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act, SAVE America Act - part of the ongoing voter suppression effort of the current administration. (See more information below about the details of the Act.)
A. Call Representative Brian Mast at 202-225-3026 and tell him that: As one of his constituents you disagree with his support of the SAVE America Act which has nothing to do with safeguarding elections; instead it was designed to keep people from voting. Despite the fact that there has been no evidence of widespread voter fraud, he has chosen to take a position that strips eligible people of their voting rights - and to that you STRONGLY OBJECT!
B. Call Senator Rick Scott at (202) 224-5274 and Senator Ashley Moody at (202)224-3041 and urge them to oppose the SAVE America Act because it has nothing to do with safeguarding elections; instead it is designed to keep eligible people from voting. Despite the fact that there has been no evidence of widespread voter fraud, the Act would strip eligible people of their voting rights - and to that you STRONGLY OBJECT!
Bad Legislation #2 - Florida Senate Bill 1134 and HB 1001 - Official Actions of Local Governments - This "Anti-Diversity in Local Government" bill blocks counties and municipalities from taking any actions related to diversity, equality or inclusion. See additional details below.
Bad Legislation #3 - Florida Senate Bill 1632 ( by Senator Erin Grall) and HB 1471 - Ideologies Inconsistent with American Principles - The ACLU has explained that what these bills do is to allow for a select few in the government to label people and organizations they disagree with as "domestic terrorists" without basic due process protections, impose aggressive punishments and expand surveillance under the banner of public safety. See additional details below.
Bad Legislation #4 - Florida Senate Bill 896 and HB 757 - School Safety(actually not)- This bill authorizes public post-secondary educational institutions to participate in the school guardian program and authorizes certain college or university employees, faculty members, and students to openly carry a handgun or carry a concealed firearm into a college or university facility. See additional details below.
At a minimum, regarding HB 1001, HB 1471 and HB 757, please call and email these Florida House members to say that as one of their constituents and a regular voter you oppose these bills and urge them to vote against them. Since their aides will count the number of calls/emails received, if possible make separate calls/send separate emails.
