STUDIO DIARY #2

Hi there,

over 15 years ago I met Jeff. While I was still studying graphic design, he had already been working as a graphic designer for nearly 20 years. I remember one particular night. I had a deadline the next day and felt completely stuck. I asked if he could come over and help. With his support I made good progress. Back then I was already deeply passionate about graphic design and could easily imagine myself working in a creative field. While exporting the project well past midnight, Jeff suddenly asked me a question: Would you do the things you are passionate about even if you didn't make any money?

I already knew what it felt like to be passionate about something, but I had also grown up in an environment where work was not about personal growth or enjoyment. It was about earning money and saving for retirement. That night I honestly didn't understand what Jeff meant. I had already invested countless hours into learning everything I could about graphic design. Of course I wanted to get a job in that field and make a living from it.

It was only years later, after taking the leap and leaving my day job to become an artist, that it finally clicked. I hadn't sold a painting for months and paying rent was becoming a problem. Of course there were days when I questioned myself. Evenings when my dreams seemed to be falling apart. But every morning, when I got up, those doubts had vanished and been replaced by excitement. I couldn't wait to hop on my bike, ride to the studio and create again. That was when I suddenly understood what Jeff had meant.

Over the past few years we only met about once a year, often spontaneously for a quick coffee and a catch-up. A couple of weeks ago he sent me a message and we arranged a studio visit for the following day. That's when Jeff offered to make a video portrait about me.

To be fair, it wasn't the first time he had made that offer, but this time it felt right. I had already been planning to make a short video about my new working method – the system I developed last year that has become the foundation of my new paintings and AV work. But doing it on my own would have taken a lot of time and, as usual, I kept postponing it in favour of exploring new ideas.

I'm used to wearing many hats, but this time I got to hand one over. It also meant we could spend more time together again. A few days later I began working on a new canvas and Jeff started dropping by almost every day to film parts of the process.

Over the coming weeks we'll continue documenting other aspects of my practice, including the AV side of my work. I'll keep you updated. For now, I'm excited to share images of my newest canvas, A BOUQUET OF THOUGHTS:

If the work speaks to you, don't hesitate to get in touch. I'd be happy to arrange a studio visit so you can experience it in person.

BOICUT X TRIKOTERIE

Earlier this year, while working on my second canvas created with my new process, TORSO, I received an email from Trikoterie, a Viennese cycling brand producing artist-designed jerseys. They asked whether I would be interested in creating a new design for their 2026 season.

Some of you may know – or even own – one of my previous Trikoterie jerseys. I was one of the first artists they invited to design a jersey when they started the project years ago. Since then we've collaborated on a new edition every few years. This project has always had a special place in my heart. Cycling is still one of the things that gives me the space to think, explore and reset. Depending on the route and rhythm of the city, a ride can make me feel calm and reflective one moment and playful and alert the next. So saying yes was easy.

What excited me most this time was that the jersey became the first artist edition based on my new body of work, DISPLACEMENT. In many ways it felt like both an exploration and a proof of concept – a chance to see how the ideas developed over the past year would translate beyond canvas and paper. Artistically, I wanted the design to feel both bold and fragile, much like my experience of moving through the city itself.

A month ago the first sample arrived from the manufacturer and I was thrilled to see how well the design translated into print. Last week I finally got to see the finished jerseys and I'm incredibly happy with the result.

It has just gone online, so head over to Trikoterie’s webshop to find more info about this collaboration and order one if you like what you see!

SOUND DIARY #2

BOICUT SOUND DIARYSOUND DIARY #2

I had already started working on a small soundscape for this issue's sound diary, turning a recording of my dishwasher into a lush ambient composition.

A few days later, I wanted to record it. But when I switched on the Torso S4 sampler – currently my favorite tool for sonic exploration – I decided to take it easy first and sit by the window, listening to the birds in the garden outside.
Then a thought crossed my mind: what if I used the sampler's internal mic and processed the birds through effects in real time to create a generative ambient soundscape?

After a bit of knob-turning, defining parameters when routing the signal through the grain engine, a scale-locked filter, delay, and reverb, I found myself sitting there for nearly an hour, simply listening. The result felt calming and exciting at the same time. At some point I accidentally bumped into a few objects around me that were picked up by the microphone as well. That made me curious. I began tapping, scraping, and hitting whatever was within reach. What I heard was stunning.

I quickly grabbed some cables and my camera and recorded myself during a coffee break by the open window. What you're hearing now is exactly that: birds outside, coffee sips, a mug touching the table, and at one point even my own humming as I unknowingly started a duet with the birds.
Throughout the day I kept returning to listen to my surroundings transformed into a generative soundscape. The following day brought heavy rain and thunderstorms, and again I found myself sitting there, listening.

Now I'm wondering whether this should become a regular practice – part meditation, part experiment. Recording everyday moments and transforming them into evolving sound environments feels like a path worth following. Different scales, grain sizes, modulation settings, weather conditions, locations – there is so much left to explore.
A small voice keeps telling me that I might be onto something.

There is also a video version on my new Youtube channel where you can see the tools and process behind these sounds in real time.

ONE MORE THING

Shortly after I sent out STUDIO DIARY #1 I finished another work on canvas. I did not want to spam you back then and thought I will show it in the next STUDIO DIARY. So here is TORSO:
