Bringing it Back
Last week I had the opportunity to connect with Sharon Nordrum a visual artist, dog trainer, and woman of many talents who shares the following about where she lives, “along the Necktie River where the deer, eagle, bear and crane call home, you can find me and my family.” It was a pleasure connecting with her, so please enjoy an excerpt from our conversation about her creative practice and how it shapes her life. As well as living along the Necktie river, Sharon comes from a family of artists and she and her son Andreas will be selling work at 6th Annual Winter Holiday Artisan Market in Bemidji, which she organizes.
The market will take place in the Carnegie Library in Bemidji, MN Friday December 15 12:00pm - 07:00 p.m. and on Saturday December 16 9:00am until 3:30pm. I hope you'll consider supporting her at this event.
While I’m sorry I couldn’t share our entire conversation here, I came away feeling more determined than ever to move some paint around. To see some of Sharon’s beautiful Ojibwe floral motifs with the stories she’s sharing through her paintings please follow her page on Facebook - Ricky Tics Art . Enough from me, let’s dive in with Sharon introducing herself and her artistry.
Instead of putting the twelve pages of transcription here, I'm going to really encourage you to listen to the words she has to share. She is a fantastic storyteller - you won't be disappointed, simply click on the image below and it will take you to the podcast where you can listen to the interview! (If you'd like a copy of the interview I am happy to provide, just reply to this email. I'll be back in town by mid-week next week and will send it out to you then!)
Enjoy!
Creative Ritual
Is anyone else wondering where November has gone off to? Wow, the end of the month just came upon me so quickly. I submitted an artist residency application, took part in a BIPOC Grant Writing Panel hosted by Springboard for the Arts, journeyed to New London a few times, and got an application in for a local exhibition opportunity. Phew! That was just the last week. Biggest news, I am heading to Calendula Gallery Saturday December 2nd for an all day art show where I'll be tabling with my small works. Come visit me! 10:00am-9:00pm. Maybe also bring me some food? I haven't been nourishing myself well... slipping into bad habits (don't check the timestamp on this missive). Also, I learned that Tiny Letter - the platform I send my newsletter out on is going to end. Ugh. We'll be transitioning into something new in the coming months. I hope you'll choose to stick with me.
Enjoy a picture of a painting I made of a beautiful scene of my heart super open basking in the love of a mesa while I visited hot springs in Northern New Mexico earlier this year. This and many other beauties will be available tomorrow at the gallery.
Thanks for journeying with me. I hope, as always, that you take what you need and leave the rest for someone else, or for another time.
